Seeing more and more of these recently - the challenge is how to pick up such seniors and quickly right site them to the appropriate long term care facility

To tube feed or not to tube feed?

In my 10.5 years of home care I have not initiated tube feeding for any of my patients

I try to get family members and caregivers to see and understand
1. There is still a risk of aspiration from saliva (tube feed does not reduce that risk)
2. 100 years ago, there was no option of tube feeding (it is perfectly ok to accept that the end is near and to “let it go” like in the old times - hand feed to the comfort of the patient)
3. There is no pain in malnutrition and dehydration
4. There should not be any guilt that one is not doing enough for one’s loved ones

Palliative Care is not just for the dying. We hear some perspectives from those close to the topic. DOCTORS FEATURED (IN ORDER OF APPEARANCE):Adj. Asst. Prof...

What we hope to do as we care for our patients at home - “I only wish for [the family] to continue to be the children they are and spend more quality time with their parents. Don’t worry about the things that are beyond what you can do. We’ll take care of the rest.”

How
1. caring for a dying family member at home (palliative care - rejecting active treatment)
2. Choosing to send a dying patient to an inpatient hospice (so that the nursing needs are taken care of while the children can continue having fruitful interactions with the patient without the burden of care)

is an act of a filial child
