Tips for Effective Tricep Pulldowns:

Set Up for Proper Form
Stand facing the cable machine with your feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, and core engaged to maintain a stable posture. Grip the attachment (straight bar, V-bar, or rope) with an overhand grip, keeping your elbows tucked close to your sides.

Focus on Elbow Position
Keep your elbows pinned to your sides throughout the movement. The triceps’ primary function is elbow extension, so the only movement should occur at the elbow joint. Avoid letting your elbows flare out or move forward, as this shifts the focus away from the triceps and can strain your shoulders.

Control the Movement and Tempo
Push the bar down by extending your elbows until your arms are fully straight, feeling a strong contraction in your triceps. Research highlights the importance of time under tension for muscle growth, so lower the weight slowly (over 2-3 seconds) rather than letting it snap back up. Pause briefly at the bottom to maximise the contraction.

Use a Full Range of Motion
Start with your forearms roughly parallel to the ground (elbows at about 90 degrees) and extend fully until your arms are straight. Avoid partial reps, as they limit tricep activation. At the bottom, slightly lean forward and allow your shoulders to extend a bit to stretch the long head of the triceps, which crosses the shoulder joint.
