Turns out Josh Earl’s Four Burners podcast isn’t about having multiple disposable mobile phones in your backpack to make crimes easier to get away with, but a discussion about the important things in life. And it was fun!

Have a listen as I talk about what my parents thought about me joining Frenzal (30 years ago this month!), how I accidentally keep getting cool jobs, some scoops about why I’m not doing one of those cool jobs at the moment, and as you can hear some fun anecdotes about the gut-brain connection which is actually the gut-brain-back-balls connection.

Listen wherever, or here:

Cheers Josh Earl Comedian!

I delved deep into the wilds of a mythical land, with author Justin McHenry on ABC Illawarra back in 2024 but forgot to post it (or the shadow government conspired to stop me one of the other) so here it is now.

Are you ready to reclaim AND embody your Lemurian lineage??

I saw a post up on Facebook which had me intrigued. What is Lemuria? Is it real? What is the Pixar film Madagascar trying to tell us?

Luckily, Justin McHenry literally wrote the book on Lemuria. Like the real story. (Which weirdly involves Rudolf Steiner) And he’s zoomed in from West Virginia to have a chat.

As a Sutho Shire kid, I spent a lot of time in Mortdale. Anyone who caught the all stations from Engadine to Central did, because for some unexplained reason the train would always slow just before Mortdale station, without a word from the driver eventually stop and leave us all hanging, before finally creaking back to life and taking us up to Red Eye Records, Ashwoods, Lawson and Utopia.

I never actually got off the train at Mortdale, but I still feel like I know the place. And I’m very excited to get back there, to The Social Brewers and play a bunch of songs with a bunch of friends. So get off at Mortdale and come along!

Repost from

Pretty blown away by the response so far.

First release tickets for Lindsay McDougall at Dead Loud disappeared fast.

If you’ve been thinking about coming, probably don’t leave this one too late.

Sunday June 28.
Small room. Sunday arvo beers. Songs and stories up close.

Doing some shows.

So let’s get down to the nitty gritty: Frenzal Rhomb’s Sans Souci is turning 23 - and we’re celebrating!

https://tix.to/FrenzalRhomb

Here at Frenzal Rhomb, the number 23 has always been important to us. 23 pairs of human chromosomes, William Burroughs’ 23 enigma, Psalm 23 in the bible, “the Lord is my shepherd”; we’ve always been big with shepherds.

Actually, that’s all nonsense, we just missed the 20th, and the world may not make it until the 25th, so this year we’re celebrating the 23rd anniversary of Sans Souci!

The difficult sixth album, Sans Souci saw us back with Camel producer Eddie Ashworth for sixteen sweet servings of shrewd social commentary slid inside some superb punk pop skins, including the green-tinged morality tale of “Bucket Bong”, the complicated relationship drama of “I Went Out With A Hippy And Now I Love Everyone Except For Her”, even trying our hand at sports metal with “Punisher”.

There was the Kernaghanesque “Looking Good”, the Gastro-rock of “Ballchef”, and that song about Russell Crowe’s band we’ve been advised by our lawyers not to talk about.

And heaps more! And we’re gonna play them all* on the Frenzal Rhomb Sans Souci 23rd Anniversary Tour. A marquee event! And it’s still French for “no worries”.

Get tickets now before Russell Crowe’s lawyers get back in touch!

https://tix.to/FrenzalRhomb

*look we may not make it through the whole album, and we probably won’t play it in order. So don’t go getting all weird and complain like that one person did on the Camel tour. We’ll give it all a red hot go though.

Like most Australian kids my age, I first met James Valentine as he was warning me that “this next episode of Degrassi Junior High has some adult themes”, on ABC’s The Afternoon Show. But of course it was the sax scenes he was really here for. Which we indulged in years later when Jason and I enlisted James to kick the triple j studio door down and do some live Sax Education back in the Jay and the Doctor days. I was really glad James and I got to have a chat about all that 80s sax crime nonsense again a couple of months ago. (JV is an innocent though. His sax was always very classy).

It’s always a risk letting us muso types into proper adult jobs like radio, I am a case in point, but ever since he popped up in between shows on tv in the 90s James has been one of my favourites. His radio show, on just before mine, is a masterclass in cool and hilarious communication, perfect collaboration with the audience, and making it all look and sound really easy (although his producers may have a different take on that last bit).

I’m very sad I won’t ever hear his calmly cutting comments and an elongated “ummmm” on the radio again, smoothly leading into my show.

A few years ago he was touring a live show around the state. It was basically his radio show - lots of audience participation and hilarity, but he also got to show off his sax chops like the model jazzman he is. I’d just started on adult radio in Wollongong and he asked me to help out, so I cobbled together all my Illawarra knowledge into this appropriation of one of his 80s contemporaries, and got James to do the sax solo. He played several more notes than the original. I posted that video back in February when James officially retired, but here’s a little more James that Jen found on her phone. A bit of Baker Street, but on Burelli Street, Wollongong.

RIP James Valentine. The solo in that Absent Friends song is still a f**ken banger. xoxoxooox

12 hours in the middle of the continent, for once not being the silliest band on the bill.

Ft. breathtaking vistas, iconic sunsets, metal meets aerial hoop meets some bloke taped up there with a 9 string guitar, and a burning pipe organ. Thanks !
