This is the hip joint or coxofemoral joint. It contains the strongest ligaments of the body, which have a tensile resistance of up to 350 kg.
Problems within the hip joint itself tend to result in pain on the inside of the hip or the groin. Hip pain on the outside of the hip, upper thigh or outer buttock is usually caused by problems with muscles, ligaments, tendons and other soft tissues that surround the hip joint.
Any hip pain that does not improve in a short period of time should be checked out by a qualified medical professional. First of all, minor muscle strain or ligament sprain can resolve with rest, but they can also develop into more chronic, nagging, long-term strain and repeated hip injury.
Sitting for extended periods of time can lead to tight or strained hip flexors. That's because excessive sitting causes the muscles to relax and deactivate (which means the muscle is “turned off”). This leads to the shortening of the hip flexors themselves, causing tightness and pain.
Should I stretch my hip if it hurts?
Following an injury, it's important to stretch a sore hip to get movement and strength back. This supports tissue healing and will help a person get moving again.
