This insightful and timely book equips family doctors and other primaryhealthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to address a diverse range of new and important challenges in the field of primary mental health care, including ongoing impacts from the COVID pandemic, thanatophobia, and end-of-life care, humanitarian and geopolitical
catastrophes, and the effects of climate change. There is an emphasis throughout on the need to encourage and reap
the benefits of interdisciplinary collaboration between family doctors and mental health specialists, and across the range of primary care and community workers. Effective primary healthcare relies increasingly on the use of remote consultations, and the book explains how the potential of remote working can be maximised in low-resource settings. The book concludes with a consideration of how to protect and enhance the mental health of primary care workers in the face of these on-going challenges in care. Reflecting the expertise of the WONCA Working Party for Mental Health (WWPMH), building on the foundations laid in the 2020 WONCA volume
Global Primary Mental Health Care, the editors and ontributors all have expertise in primary mental health care at the frontline, with backgrounds in family medicine, psychiatry, psychology, and nursing.

Prof Shlomo Vinker represented WONCA Europe at the Hungarian Association of Family Doctors (HAOSZ) 5th National Conference, that took place between June 12โ€“14, 2025, in Balatonalmรกdi, Hungary. Themed โ€œWhat is the Role of Primary Care in the Future Healthcare System?โ€, the event brought together healthcare professionals, policymakers, and international experts to explore how primary care can assume a more central role in Hungary's healthcare landscape, which remains overly hospital-centered.
The conference was attended by over 650 participants, with the professional program supported by more than 100 distinguished speakers, including national and international experts. Sessions included symposia, interactive workshops, and thematic sections tailored to physicians, dentists, and healthcare professionals across the full spectrum of primary care. Discussions focused on enhancing the role and competencies of primary care, including prescribing rights, referral authority, financing reform, and digital transformation โ€” all key to building a more efficient and accessible system.

The European Health Alliance on Alcohol (EHAA), of which WONCA Europe is member of, representing 1.2 million health professionals across Europe, has submitted a formal letter of support for Ireland's alcohol labelling regulations, set to take effect in May 2026.

This evidence-based policy is critical for reducing alcohol-related harm, ensuring consumer health literacy, and safeguarding public trust.

We call on the Irish Government to resist commercial pressure and implement this measure without delay.

Prof Eva Hummers, WONCA Europe Honorary Secretary, represented WONCA Europe at the EICA (European Interdisciplinary Council on Ageing) https://eica.univiu.org/ Stakeholder Expert Meeting meeting โ€žInfectious diseases, Infection control, Vaccines, and Long-Term Careโ€œ held at Venice International University, San Servolo Island, Venice, Italy, July 9th-11th, 2025
EICA is the European Interdisciplinary Council on Ageing, set up with the support of the European Union Geriatric Medicine Society (EUGMS) https://www.eugms.org/, aimed to diversify the institutional activities in education of non-geriatrician medical specialists caring for older patients, GPs and healthcare workers.
EICA aims to fill an educational gap in the care of older adults, by organizing interdisciplinary activities in geriatrics and age-related issues. In parallel, EICA aims to translate the scientific research results published by the European Community into practical language, to facilitate transfer of the knowledge to decision makers and the wider public
Invitation of WONCA Europe to this meeting was a follow-up of our (Eva Hummers) invited participation in a Technical Meeting of the AIB (Adult Immunization Board, https://www.adultimmunizationboard.org/) organized 7th-8th May 2025 in Warsaw (Poland).

In the San Servolo Meeting, different aspects on prevention and control of infectious diseases in residents of long term care facilities/nursing homes were presented and discussed (see programme). The main focus was on vaccine-preventable respiratory diseases (influenza, COVID-19, pneumococcal pneumonia/IPD, RSV, pertussis) and also Herpes Zoster, as well as more general aspects of infection control, for example through infection control committees and trainings in nursing homes. Experts included medical doctors from different fields (geriatrics, hygiene, public health, general practice among others), nurses, and interest groups (EICA, AIB, European Scientific Working group on Influenza and other Respiratory Viruses (ESWI) https://eswi.org /), as well as a representative from European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) https://www.ecdc.europa.eu/en, and two industry observers.
The various pieces of research presented allow for some remarkable conclusions:
Nursing home/long term care residents are a population vulnerable to infectious diseases. One predominant risk factor is older age. However, the only really relevant other risk factor is the fact of living in a nursing home, rather than any specific morbidities or combination thereof. While this may well be somewhat biased by indication, there also appears to be substantial differences between facilities as to the risk they pose to their inhabitants.
The risk associated with living in a nursing home seems to be institutional rather than individual.
Adequate building infrastructure, infection-conscious cleaning and laundry routines, contact hygiene and adequate contact management of (index) cases of infection are essential, but not always given sufficient attention.
Adults/elderly people's access to vaccines against respiratory diseases and Herpes Zoster vary considerably between countries. Public recommendations and cost coverage do not necessarily align. Even in countries where vaccinations are recommended and paid for resident of long term care facilities, coverage is often mediocre. Access can be particularly cumbersome for people living in long term care facilities as they need to rely on various other parties to facilitate vaccination.
In long term care facilities, both general infection control measures and better access to vaccinations require defined responsabilities, workflow routines: Who keeps track of vaccination schedules and needs, who initates and organises consent, who actually delivers the vaccinations? This may vary in different healthcare systems, but will require both interprofessional teams and appropriate management.
Flu and COVID vaccination coverage among health care providers and other nursing home staff is often poor even when recommended, in particular in staff with less formal education.
Interaction between infectious diseases and noncommunicable diseases and the prevention of NCD complications triggered by infection merit further attention.

The 14th EURIPA Rural Health Forum took place in Lutherstadt Wittenberg, Germany, from June 26th to June 28th, 2025. The title of the Forum was "Rural Reformation: Meeting Wellbeing and Healthcare Needs in Rural Communities." The event brought together primary healthcare professionals, and educationalists and researchers to discuss challenges and innovations in primary rural healthcare.
The Forum had 118 attendees who came from 24 countries, who participated in an interesting programme.
The Official Opening Ceremony featured speeches from prominent figures the Secretary of State Mr Wolfgang Beck; Prof. Dr. med. Heike Kielstein, Dean of the Medical Faculty of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Germany; and an inspiring Inaugural Address on behalf of DEGAM (German Society of General Practice/Family Medicine) was given by Professor Dr. Markus Herrman, Institute for General Practice Otto-von-Guericke-University, Magdeburg, Germany. Prof Thomas Frese, president elect of WONCA Europe, Germany and the local host of the Forum and Dr Ferdinando Petrazzuoli, President of EURIPA, Italy, both gave a welcome address.
The four keynote lectures addressed the themes of the Forum:
Prof Kerstin Hรคmel, Bielefeld University and the University of Vienna, Austria, focused on the rural workforce โ€œCollaborative Practice in Rural Primary Health Care: Expanding Nurse Roles to Meet the Complex Needs of Chronically Ill Personsโ€.
Prof Dr Andrรฉe Rochfort, the Irish College of GPs, Dublin, Ireland, and past-president of the European Society for Quality and Safety in Family Practice (EQuiP) delivered an insightful talk on "One Health".
Prof Russell Roberts, Charles Sturt University, Australia, spoke about the importance of applying research to optimise clinical and public health impact
Prof Karen Flegg, President of WONCA World, Australia, focussed on global rural healthcare.
This year EURIPA Rural Health Forum received a record number of abstract submissions and there were three parallel sessions throughout the Forum, this included 8 sessions for Oral presentations, 6 workshops sessions and, new for this year, there was a session for One slide 5 minutes. The posters were displayed throughout the Forum. You can download the abstract book, which includes all the abstracts including those from key notes speakers at https://advances.umw.edu.pl/en/euripa-2025
The full programme for the Forum is on the web site (https://forum.euripa.org).
The oral presentations included topics which ranged from rural medical education, access to medication, rural recruitment strategies, and telemedicine innovations. The award for the best oral presentation was awarded to: David Halata and Katerina Javorska, Slovak Society of General Practice, for the presentation โ€œLet's walk together for healthโ€ - a way to build a healthy community
The Berit Hansen Award for the Best oral presentation by a young doctor was awarded to Romina Jasmin Frenzel, Germany, for the presentation on Needs of older people in Brandenburg
Posters also covered a wide range of topics and the award for the best poster was awarded to Jamal Bannourah, Institut fรผr Allgemeinmedizin โ€“ Universitรคtsklinikum, Freiburg (Germany) for the poster on Model Regions for Medical Training.
The winners are entitled to free registration at the next EURIPA Forum in 2026. The winners of the best oral communication and poster presentation are also entitled to waived publishing fees for the journal Advances in Clinical and Experimental Medicine.
In addition to the workshops and oral presentations, there were additional features in the programme. An intergenerational session: โ€œPassing the torchโ€ was held on-line and speakers from Australia, Croatia, UK, Canada and Germany discussed their perspectives on a variety of issues giving insight into differences and similarities between experienced and young family doctors.
Due to unforeseen circumstances practice visits were not possible, but a virtual tour followed by a discussion panel provided an insight into German rural family medicine. This was followed by an "Elevator Pitch" session which allowed participants to share research ideas, in an innovative way. In parallel, there was an interactive roundtable discussion focussing on โ€œUnderstanding Rural Practice through sharing practice experiences: A Dialogic Workshopโ€.
The final plenary session involved a panel discussion on "Rural Reformation" featured experts from Germany, Austria, Ireland, Australia and the UK.
The concept of โ€œRural Reformationโ€ was captured in the Wittenberg statement which was presented in the closing ceremony, by Professor Joyce Kenkre, co-chair of the EURIPA Scientific Board, United Kingdom. The Statement is available on the website.
The programme also included time for networking and the social programme included the Welcome Reception, the Rural Dinner and a tourist trip in the UNESCO heritage centre of Wittenberg.
The Forum closed with the announcement of the 15th EURIPA Rural Health Forum, which is being planned in partnership with the Spanish Society of Family and Community Medicine (semFYC) in Cartagena (Murcia), Spain, from 1โ€“3 October 2026.
The 14th EURIPA Rural Health Forum successfully addressed critical issues in rural healthcare, fostering collaboration and innovation among participants. The event highlighted the importance of research, education, and policy development to improve healthcare delivery in rural communities.
Finally, EURIPA would like to thank the local host, the Institute of General Practice and Family Medicine, Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg and the Journal of Advances in Clinical and Experimental Medicine for their support in publishing the Abstract Book.
