An allogeneic bone marrow transplant involves receiving stem cells from a healthy donor to treat certain cancers or blood disorders. Here’s how it works:

Donor Selection:
Healthy Donor: A relative or matched unrelated donor undergoes health checks to ensure suitability.

Stem Cell Collection:
Blood Collection: Stem cells are taken from the donor's blood using apheresis.
Bone Marrow Collection: Stem cells are extracted directly from the donor’s hip bone in a minor procedure.

Processing the Stem Cells:
Separation and Selection: Stem cells are separated and treated with antibodies to ensure they are ready for transplant.

Preparing the Recipient:
Conditioning Therapy: The recipient undergoes chemotherapy or radiation to suppress the immune system and prepare for the new stem cells.

Transplantation:
Infusion: Stem cells are infused into the recipient’s bloodstream, similar to a blood transfusion.
Engraftment: Stem cells travel to the bone marrow and start producing new, healthy blood cells.

Recovery:
Monitoring: The recipient is closely monitored for weeks to months for engraftment and potential complications like infections or GVHD.
