Volunteering as a RN with the Africa Mercy

Volunteering as a RN with the Africa Mercy I volunteer as a nurse with Mercy Ships. I work as a scrub nurse offering free surgeries in Africa My name is Abby Mills and I am a 38yr old nurse. Xx Abby

I am currently on a field service as a volunteer scrub nurse on the Africa Mercy Ship which will be docked in Senegal from January till November 2022. I have returned to Dakar after spending two months here in February and March this year to do another stint on the Africa Mercy for 9 weeks. Mercy Ships is a not for profit organisation that offers free surgeries to people in developing nations that can not afford health care. The Africa Mercy Ship is, in essence a floating hospital, that every year travels to a different African country and brings hope and healing to the poor people of these countries who do not have access to safe and affordable surgical care. Mercy Ships performs life changing and often life saving surgeries for absolutely no charge to the people in those countries who are in need. This will be my sixth volunteer stint on the Africa Mercy Ship since 2014. My job on the ship is working as a scrub nurse in the operating theatre, assisting the surgeons in the surgeries. This time I will be a scrub nurse team leader and will be helping to coordinate one of the Operating Rooms specialising in General and Paediatric Orthopaedic surgeries. As one of the volunteer crew I will live and work onboard the ship where it is docked in Dakar. I will fly to meet the ship and while Mercy Ships this time have helped with the flight costs due to my only being home for six weeks between trips, there are other travel related costs I must cover. If you are able to support me in any way, by partnering with me and Mercy Ships to perform surgeries that often save and change lives of the poor in Africa I would be so grateful. I know a lot of people have the heart to help those less fortunate but do not necessarily have the skills or time needed to do this. By donating towards my trip you will be contributing the resources you do have to help do this amazing work not only in performing free surgeries but also training local healthcare workers in countries to improve their practices and work towards more safe and affordable access to healthcare for the people. If you are able to support me financially please go to

If you are not in a position to give financially I completely understand, but perhaps if you are a praying person can I ask for your support in prayer for myself, our patients, for Mercy Ships and the whole operation here in Dakar. Thank you so much for your support friends, I will keep you updated with details of my trip, or follow me on page and my instagram page !! Many blessings!

My recent short trip to work on the Global Mercy which is in Freetown Sierra Leone was wonderful.
Mostly made so by my wonderful friends, day crew and some great Surgeons and fellow nurses that I worked with in my operating room.
Here’s some pics of my time that was a little too short but very sweet!!

With only 2 Anaethetists working in the public hospitals in the whole country, the people Sierra Leone are very in need of some surgical assistance. The Global Mercy is almost ready to sail to Freetown where it will be docked for the next 10 months.
Watch this video to learn more about Sierra Leone and you might just catch a glimpse of me helping operate on a patient!

Hello friends!!
I have just returned from my stint with Mercy Ships for this year, and this time it was on our new ship the Global Mercy.
We completed our final Field Service in Dakar Senegal after 3 years (with covid in between).
As usual whilst there I’ve locked in my next time frame of volunteering.
I’m heading back to the Global Mercy in November this year to do a bit of a different role. I will be working as a part of the Eye Team this time, doing Pre and Post op cataract care. The ship is heading to Freetown in Sierra Leone 🇸🇱🇸🇱🇸🇱
This is just a heads up that I will be again reactivating my fundraising page.
I’d be so happy if you would consider partnering with me in this mission!
