‼️Sierra Leone Owes Its Youths: Is There Hope at the End of the Tunnel?

By Amb. Unisa Totti Fofanah

Sierra Leone stands at a crossroads. With over 70% of its population under the age of 35, the country is rich in youthful energy, creativity, and potential. Yet, for many young Sierra Leoneans, these strengths have not translated into real opportunities for dignified work and economic advancement. The enduring challenge of youth unemployment and underemployment casts a long shadow over the dreams of an entire generation, threatening not only personal aspirations but the nation’s long-term socio-economic stability.

The Preamble of Sierra Leone’s post-war recovery journey once echoed with optimism, a commitment to rebuild lives, restore hope, and empower citizens to contribute meaningfully to national progress. Two decades after the brutal civil war, however, youth unemployment remains stubbornly high, with thousands of graduates entering an economy that struggles to absorb their skills and aspirations. Young men and women brimming with ambition often find themselves relegated to informal work or forced into survival hustles that barely sustain their daily needs, driving disillusionment and social distress.

It is important to acknowledge that successive governments and partners have launched initiatives aimed at tackling this crisis. The ambitious Youth Employment Scheme (YES) aims to create 500,000 pathways to dignified work by 2030, emphasizing job creation, skills development, and youth-led innovation across sectors such as agribusiness and the creative industries. Similarly, civil society and international bodies have invested in vocational training, livelihood projects, and digital skills platforms that expand the horizons for young people, particularly in sectors like digital freelancing and tech. These efforts signal a shift toward empowering youth not as beneficiaries of charity but as architects of their own futures.

Yet, real hope demands more than well-intentioned programs. It requires systemic transformation. Structural barriers such as educational mismatches, skill gaps, limited access to capital, and the informal dominance of the economy continue to impede meaningful progress. Moreover, young people in rural districts still confront bleak employment landscapes, where opportunities are sparse, and many government interventions fail to pe*****te fully. To bridge this divide, Sierra Leone must prioritize quality technical and vocational education (TVET), stronger linkages with market demands, and public private partnerships that incentivize sustainable job creation rather than just stopgap employment schemes.

Despite the enormity of the challenge, there are reasons for cautious optimism. A youth-driven culture of entrepreneurship, rising participation in digital economies, and growing advocacy for inclusive policy reform show that Sierra Leone’s young people are not passive bystanders. They are agents of change. The journey ahead may be long, and the tunnel may seem dark, but the light at its end will not shine by chance. It will be the product of visionary leadership, strategic investment, and a collective national commitment to ensure that Sierra Leone’s youths are not just owed opportunities but are empowered to seize them.

‼️Bai Bureh Heritage Foundation Director, Amb. Unisa Totti Fofanah Sends End of Year Message.

As the year 2025 draws to a close, I extend warm greetings and profound gratitude to all Sierra Leoneans at home and abroad on behalf of the Bai Bureh Heritage Foundation. This season invites us to reflect on how far we have come as a people and as a nation, and to honor the legacy of Bai Bureh, whose courage, integrity, and resistance to injustice continue to inspire our collective journey. Over the last eight years, the Foundation has worked tirelessly to preserve and promote our cultural heritage, strengthen national identity, and empower communities through education, research, advocacy, and empowering young people.

These achievements would not have been possible without the support of our partners, our goodwill people, volunteers, beneficiaries, and community leaders across Sierra Leone and throughout the diaspora. From grassroots cultural preservation projects in our hometown of Port Loko to national engagements and digital archives that share our story with the world, your contributions have breathed life into our vision and mission. You have helped ensure that the story of Bai Bureh is not merely remembered but is actively used as a tool for learning, unity, and nation-building.

Over the past eight years, we have seen remarkable progress. We have supported youth leadership, community development initiatives, and fostered dialogue between generations. Through these efforts, the Foundation has become more than an institution. It has become a movement dedicated to safeguarding Sierra Leone’s rich heritage while inspiring a new generation to value their roots. This work has strengthened pride in our identity and reinforced the importance of history as a guide for the future.

As we look ahead, we remain committed to expanding our programs, deepening community engagement, and leveraging technology to build a coalition of more productive young people. The challenges before us, whether economic, social, or cultural, require the same spirit of resilience that Bai Bureh embodied. With your continued support, the Bai Bureh Heritage Foundation will continue to stand as a beacon of cultural integrity, historical truth, and national unity for Sierra Leoneans everywhere.

I offer heartfelt thanks to every individual and organization that has contributed to our journey over the last eight years. Your dedication affirms that our shared heritage is a powerful force for positive change. May the coming year bring renewed strength, deeper collaboration, and greater opportunities to celebrate and protect the legacy that binds us together as Sierra Leoneans. On behalf of the Bai Bureh Heritage Foundation, I wish you and your family peace, prosperity, and a hopeful new year.

‼️At the 8th Service Delivery Awards, Bai Bureh Heritage Foundation Pays Tribute to Three of Its Departed Contributors

Bai Bureh Heritage Foundation held a deeply emotional tribute during its 8th Service Delivery Awards on the 13th of December 2025 at the Port Loko District Council Conference Hall. The solemn moment was led by the Foundation’s Executive Director, Ambassador Unisa Fofanah (Totti), who paused the celebration to honor three departed contributors whose dedication and sacrifices helped shape the Foundation’s journey. The late Father Elijah Gegra of Culture Radio, Aunty Baby Blues, and Chairman Sheku Tejan Saccoh of the Port Loko District Council were remembered with heartfelt words and visual tributes. As their photographs appeared on a PowerPoint presentation highlighting the Foundation’s 2025 impact and its plans for 2026, emotions filled the hall, reminding everyone of the lasting legacy these individuals left behind. May their souls rest in perfect peace.

Father Elijah Gegra was celebrated as a pillar of support and inspiration to the Bai Bureh Heritage Foundation. As the owner of Culture Radio, he became the first high-profile personality to visit Foundation members from Freetown at the very beginning of its operations in 2019. From that historic moment until his passing, Father Elijah generously offered free airtime and advertisements for all foundation programs and activities, ensuring their voice reached a wider audience. He also attended the annual awards ceremony intermittently, standing as a symbol of encouragement and belief in the Foundation’s mission. His steadfast support played a crucial role in strengthening the Foundation’s visibility and confidence during its formative years.

The tribute to Aunty Baby Blues was particularly touching, as she was remembered not just as a supporter but as a mother figure to every member of the Foundation. During the early stages, when opposition outweighed support, she was among the very few who ignited hope and courage in young people determined to give back to society. From 2018 until her death, she served as the Foundation’s cook, yet she consistently rejected the title of “caterer.” Instead, she embraced the Foundation’s struggles as her own, often saying, “Bring whatever little you have, I will do my best to bring out the best.” Her compassion, humility, and selflessness left an indelible mark, and the absence felt over the past two years remains a painful gap. Mama Baby Blues is forever missed and cherished.

The sudden death of Chairman Sheku Tejan Saccoh created another profound void within the Bai Bureh Heritage Foundation. As Chairman of the Port Loko District Council, he firmly believed in the Foundation’s vision and mission, offering guidance and support whenever needed. His tenure added him to the roll of dependable personalities the Foundation relied upon during emergencies or moments of uncertainty. A close friend of Executive Director Amb. Unisa Fofanah, for over thirteen years, Chairman Saccoh frequently visited the Foundation’s office, inspiring members to keep pushing forward. He championed an open-door policy, making himself accessible to every member who sought his counsel or assistance.

In closing the tribute, the Foundation acknowledged that Chairman Sheku Tejan Saccoh departed with many unfulfilled dreams, including major plans he was set to unveil during the 8th edition of the awards. Yet, the Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to preserving the memories and legacies of all three departed contributors. In their honor, a large glass-framed portrait featuring Father Elijah Gegra, Aunty Baby Blues, and Chairman Sheku Tejan Saccoh will be displayed, ensuring their stories continue to inspire generations yet unborn. Though they are gone, their impact remains alive in the heart and work of the Bai Bureh Heritage Foundation.
