The Sierra Leone Red Cross Society, through the GAVI, the vaccine Alliance funded project, has implemented an innovative mobile cinema initiative to promote vaccination in hard to reach communities in kambia district, combining impactful visual storytelling with local community drama and comedy. Before watching the videos, community members were engaged with questions to assess their existing knowledge and understanding of routine immunization, creating a foundation for meaningful learning. After viewing educational films, animations, that highlighted the importance, safety, and efficacy of routine immunizationโ€”including COVID-19 vaccinesโ€”the community drama team, composed of local residents, performed relatable plays in their own language, captivating audiences and addressing myths in a culturally resonant way. The team also asked participants what they had learned and if their perceptions had changed, fostering reflection and reinforcing key messages. This approach not only increased awareness and dispelled misconceptions but also built trust in healthcare workers and encouraged positive health behaviors, empowering community members to become vaccine advocates and ultimately supporting improved immunization coverage for a healthier Sierra Leone.

The Red Cross emblem, designed in 1864, is a symbol of protection. It is the opposite of the Swiss flag, chosen for its universality and neutrality. It is not a logo, it is a promise.

A promise we can still keep. Respect for the Fundamental Principles is not an end in itself, but a means to preserve this promise. Humanity is our reason for being. Neutrality is what allows us to engage with all parties to reach those in need. Impartiality ensures that aid goes only to those who need it most.

We call on States to safeguard humanitarian space. To ensure that sanctions do not hinder aid. To protect our emblems so they continue to provide safe access. To combat disinformation.

Imagine a battlefield, the chaos, the confusion. It was in such a context, well over 60 years ago, that the idea of โ€‹โ€‹principled humanitarian action was born. It wasn't formally adopted until 1965, but it has always been our backbone.

The 7 Fundamental Principles weren't born in an office. They are the fruit of field experience, of the need to make ethical choices in the worst crises. They are our compass in the storm, the one that allows us to negotiate access across front lines, reunite separated families, and mobilize thousands of volunteers with complete impartiality. 2.

They are not abstract. They are operational. They make the difference between life and death.

๐ŸŒโค๏ธ World First Aid Day
๐Ÿ“… 13 September

Today, the Sierra Leone Red Cross Society proudly joins the global Red Cross & Red Crescent Movement to commemorate World First Aid Day under the theme:

โœจ โ€œFirst Aid and Climate Change โ€“ Saving Lives in a Changing Climate.โ€

In Sierra Leone, climate change brings frequent floods, landslides, building collapses, and other emergencies that put lives at risk. In these moments, First Aid is our first line of defense.

From rescuing flood victims, responding to building collapses, road accidents, or sudden disastersโ€”our volunteers have always been the first in and the last out. ๐Ÿš‘โœŠ

Beyond emergencies, we continue to train schools, institutions, and communities in First Aidโ€”empowering more Sierra Leoneans with lifesaving skills and building resilience in a changing climate.

On this World First Aid Day, we reaffirm our commitment to saving lives and call on everyone to learn at least one lifesaving skill. Because together, First Aid saves lives, builds resilience, and gives hope. ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ’ช
