The Somaliland minorities collectively – and minority members individually – suffer denial and abuse of the whole range of basic human rights set out in international and regional conventions including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR), Convention Against Torture (CAT), International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD), and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, all of which are legally binding on Somaliland. USWO as an indigenous organization mandates the respect of the Universal Declarations of Human Rights (UDHR) and the subsequent International Covenants on Economic, Social and Cultural and on Civil and Political Rights, and further International Bill of human right treaties on specific protection to vulnerable groups, such as minority, women and minority children groups in two sets of mechanisms: Firstly the promotion of the respect for human rights is one of the indispensable purposes of the Ubah Social Welfare Organization. The traditional clan structure formed by the Somaliland majority clans continues to exclude outcast minorities from political participation and employment; limits their access to justice where abuse has been perpetrated against them or they stand accused of a crime; denies them their rights to development, education and sustainable livelihoods; and places restrictions on intermarriage between majorities and minorities. USWO is the LNGO of its kind established by members of minority individuals working in the area to voice out range persisted problems of discrimination and isolations that deprived minority societies in Somaliland from their social, economic and political rights. Ubah Social Welfare Organization better is known widely as ‘USWO’ is non-political, non-profit making minority right based Organization, which concerned minority activists and individuals have found it in 2004 and officially registered with the Somaliland National Planning and Coordination Ministry and Attorney General Office.
