“Healthy Smiles for a Brighter Future” – School Oral Health Day Initiative
In celebration of World Oral Health Day 2026, the Faculty of Dentistry at Mogadishu University successfully organized a one-week School Oral Health Program implemented by Mogadishu dental students under faculty supervision.
This initiative reflects our commitment to advancing preventive oral health and empowering young students to take responsibility for their smiles. It also provided dental students with valuable hands-on experience in community dentistry while serving the local community.
🎯 Program Objectives
The program aimed to promote oral health awareness, prevent dental diseases, and encourage healthy oral hygiene behaviors among school-aged children.
Key activities included:
• Dental screening using the DMFT/dmft index
• Age-appropriate oral health education sessions
• Demonstrations of proper tooth-brushing techniques
• Promotion of fluoride use and reduced sugar intake
• Interactive learning activities to engage students
📌 Program Activities
1️⃣ Dental Screening
Students received non-invasive oral examinations to assess dental caries status using the DMFT/dmft index, identify referral cases, and provide preventive counseling.
2️⃣ Oral Health Education
Small group sessions were conducted using demonstration models covering:
• Importance of oral health
• Causes and prevention of tooth decay
• Correct tooth-brushing techniques
• Healthy dietary habits
• Importance of regular dental check-ups
Key Message:
🪥 Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste
🍭 Reduce sugary snacks and drinks
🦷 Visit the dentist every 6 months
3️⃣ Creative Engagement Activities
Students participated in fun learning activities including:
• Coloring sheets on oral hygiene
• Drawing competition: “My Healthy Smile”
Participants also received oral hygiene kits to encourage healthy daily habits.

• Increased oral health awareness among schoolchildren
• Early identification of dental problems
• Improved knowledge of proper brushing techniques
• Strengthened university–community collaboration
• Promotion of preventive oral health practices
