Du'a after taking your first sip of water or bite of a date.
1. The Prophetic Du'a
This is the most authentic supplication to recite immediately after taking your first sip of water or bite of a date.
Arabic:
ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ وَابْتَلَّتِ الْعُرُوقُ وَثَبَتَ الأَجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ
Transliteration:
Dhahaba al-zam'u, wabtallati al-'uruqu, wa thabata al-ajru in sha' Allah.
Translation:
"The thirst is gone, the veins are moistened, and the reward is certain, if Allah wills."
2. An Alternative Traditional Du'a
While the one above is the most authenticated from the Hadith, many people also recite this shorter version before eating:
Arabic:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي لَكَ صُمْتُ وَبِكَ آمَنْتُ وَعَلَى رِزْقِكَ أَفْطَرْتُ
Transliteration:
Allahumma inni laka sumtu, wa bika aamantu, wa 'ala rizqika aftartu.
Translation:
"O Allah! I fasted for You and I believe in You and I break my fast with Your sustenance."
Tips for Iftaar
The Golden Moment: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) mentioned that the Du'a of a fasting person at the moment of breaking the fast is not rejected. Spend a few minutes before the Adhan making personal prayers for your family, health, and guidance.
Keep it Simple: Start with a few dates and water, as was the Sunnah, before moving on to a full meal.
Gratitude: Iftaar is a lesson in appreciation. Taking that first sip of water after a long day is the perfect time to reflect on the blessings we often take for granted.
