Partnering with private healthcare facilities in Somalia and Somaliland, using the Market Systems Development (MSD) approach, to break down barriers to medical care and improve accessibility, affordability, and effectiveness for all. The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperationโ€™s Private Sector Partnerships in Health (PSPH) programme, implemented by DT Global, pioneers the Market Systems Development (MSD) approach in the health sector to enhance access to quality, affordable healthcare for all Somali citizens, including marginalized groups. Operating across Somalia and Somaliland, DT Global is collaborating with the Somali Research and Development Institute (SORDI) and the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) to develop pro-poor healthcare financing mechanisms and strengthen private sector health service delivery. As the worldโ€™s only MSD health programme and Somaliaโ€™s sole donor-funded initiative engaging commercial private providers, PSPH delivers technical assistance and drives innovation without grants. With a lean team, PSPH has successfully launched dozens of interventions, supported providers serving over 853,000 patients, introduced Somaliaโ€™s first affordable health insurance products, and trained over 500 healthcare professionals in hospital management and business skills.

As global ODA shrinks, health systems must increasingly explore innovative and sustainable financing solutions to maintain essential services, especially through bundled approaches that deliver greater benefits.

Through the Embassy of Switzerland in Nairobi (SDC)-funded PSPH Project, the Somaliland Family Health Association (SOFHA) has introduced the ๐”๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ค๐ก๐š๐ฒ๐ซ ๐Œ๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ง๐š๐ฅ ๐‚๐š๐ซ๐ž ๐๐š๐œ๐ค๐š๐ ๐ž, a bundled initiative designed to make maternal health services more affordable while strengthening financial sustainability.

Over the weekend, our Hargeisa team โ€“ Ahmed ADEN, Dr Hamda Warsame, with support from our Health Financing Expert Ndiang'ui Githinji โ€“ conducted an orientation and product sensitisation session for 17 female SOFHA staff members, including receptionists, nurses, midwives, and marketing personnel. The session equipped frontline staff with the knowledge to guide clients, clearly explain the benefits of the packages, and demonstrate how bundled services compare with conventional care.

This package supports expectant women across the continuum of care through three options: an ๐€๐ง๐ญ๐ž๐ง๐š๐ญ๐š๐ฅ ๐‚๐š๐ซ๐ž ๐๐š๐œ๐ค๐š๐ ๐ž, a ๐Œ๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ง๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ (๐ƒ๐ž๐ฅ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ฒ) ๐๐š๐œ๐ค๐š๐ ๐ž, and a ๐‚๐จ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ซ๐ž๐ก๐ž๐ง๐ฌ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž ๐๐š๐œ๐ค๐š๐ ๐ž covering antenatal, delivery, and postnatal care.

To improve affordability, the packages include discounts ranging from $5 to $15 on individual services and a $25 discount on the comprehensive maternal package. Additionally, clients receive a membership card that unlocks further discounted services, helping reduce out-of-pocket expenses for families.

Beyond improving affordability, the initiative represents a practical step toward alternative health financing, enabling health facilities to recover costs while expanding access to essential maternal services, which is at the heart of the PSPH Project.

This milestone is poised to increase the utilisation of maternal health services, reduce financial burden on families, improve maternal health outcomes, progress toward Universal Health Coverage (UHC), and contribute to reducing maternal morbidity and mortality among Somalis.

As development financing landscapes continue to shift, innovative models such as the Umulkhayr Maternal Care Package demonstrate how local health systems can adapt, balancing affordability, access, and sustainability.

๐ŸŽ‰A defining milestone for sports healthcare in Somaliland.

Dr Ismail Speciality Hospital, a key intervention partner on the PSPH Project, has officially launched the countryโ€™s first advanced Special Sports Youth Promotion Package, introducing Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) repair and reconstruction services locally for the very first time.

Until now, athletes facing ACL injuries were forced to seek treatment abroad, bearing heavy financial and logistical burdens. Today, they can access world-class surgical care and comprehensive rehabilitation at home.

The launch brought together 96 stakeholders (including 86 men and 10 women) from government ministries, the Somaliland Football Association, sports clubs, sponsors, and healthcare professionals, a powerful signal of national commitment.

With patient testimonials, live demonstrations, and strong policy support, this initiative strengthens Somalilandโ€™s health system while empowering its growing community of athletes.

The Embassy of Switzerland in Nairobi-funded PSPH Project team is proud to support partners driving sustainable, specialist healthcare where it matters most.

A huge congratulations to Dr Ismail Speciality Hospital.

Exceptional care doesnโ€™t happen by chance. It is the result of intentional investment in people.

Last Tuesday, our Mogadishu-based Intervention Manager, Dr. Jamal Hussein, led a Care Training at Dhiblawe Clinic, where over 21 team members, including senior management and clinical staff, joined forces to elevate our service standards.

When leadership steps into the classroom alongside their team, it sends a powerful message: patient experience is our top priority.

Moving beyond generic theory, the session was specifically tailored to the unique environment and daily realities of our clinic. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with participants highlighting the practical, immediate applications of the training.

Working with Dhiblawe Clinic, the Embassy of Switzerland in Nairobi-funded PSPH project team is committed to raising the bar together.

Healthcare workers are holding fragile systems together, often at the cost of their own mental health.

Globally, 1 in 4 report anxiety, depression, or burnout. In Somaliaโ€™s private health sector, shrinking ODA and rising demand are intensifying the strain.

Resilient health systems begin with resilient people.

Emotional Intelligence isnโ€™t a 'soft skill'. It's a trainable safeguard against burnout, linked to stronger leadership and better patient outcomes.

Tomorrow, the Embassy of Switzerland in Nairobi-funded PSPH project is hosting a masterclass:

Sustainable healthcare in Somalia requires more than just funding. It requires a shift in how we build health systems.

Last evening, our team, led by Dr. Jamal Hussein and Maryan Abdulkadir Ahmed, met with DR:Harun Specialist Hospital in Baidoa, Somalia, to discuss how the PSPH project can support their growth. Our model is built on technical assistance, not grants.

Through a Market Systems Development (MSD) lens, we provide commercial providers with a comprehensive support system, encompassing business development tips, specialized training, and more.

We do this to create financially viable hospitals that provide high-quality, affordable care for the long term.

Dr. Haruun Hospital is a member of Caafinet Enterprise in Mogadishu, a union of providers formed to end fragmentation in healthcare, with the support of the Embassy of Switzerland in Nairobi-funded PSPH. We look forward to a fruitful partnership with Dr. Haruun Hospital as we work to reshape the healthcare market.

Women doctors hold the key to unlocking the future of maternal care. This was the central theme of a networking event hosted by Horseed Hospital in , in partnership with PSPH. Bringing together 97 healthcare professionals, this event served as a vital forum for prioritizing womenโ€™s health and strengthening the systems that support it.

While hospital leadership shared updates on growth and strategic goals, the conversation focused heavily on the essential role of female practitioners. Recognised as vital advocates, these doctors were encouraged to leverage their unique influence to increase referrals and guide women safely through pregnancy, childbirth, and beyond. Their leadership is the backbone of the hospitalโ€™s mission to provide specialized, compassionate care.

Through this initiative and in collaboration with the Embassy of Switzerland in Nairobi-funded PSPH, Horseed Hospital is reaffirming its commitment to enhancing maternal health outcomes. By streamlining referral pathways, the hospital is creating safer journeys for mothers and healthier beginnings for families.

The event was more than a meeting; it was a celebration of dedicated staff and a catalyst for interdepartmental collaboration. Together, we are working toward a singular, powerful vision, a future where maternal care is prioritised, womenโ€™s voices are elevated, and no mother is left without the support she deserves.

On 15 February 2026, we conducted a Customer Care Training in Mogadishu, Somalia, for 30 Caafinet Network staff, comprising 14 women and 16 men, which reflected strong gender representation.

The training strengthened practical skills in customer service excellence, client retention, patient satisfaction, and professional communication.

Through interactive discussions, case studies, and role-plays tailored to the Somali healthcare context, participants gained tools they can immediately apply in their facilities.

By investing in people, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation-funded PSPH project aims to strengthen patient trust, improve experience, and support long-term sustainability across the Caafinet network.

PSPH strengthens โ€™s healthcare market through knowledge-based technical assistance, not grants. Using a (MSD) approach, we partner with commercial private providers to build financially viable, well-regulated hospitals that sustainably expand access to quality, affordable care.

Our collaboration with Bushra Hospital in Baidoa, among others, for example, reflects this model in action. During a recent visit, our Intervention Managers, Dr. Jamal Hussein and Maryan Abdulkadir Ahmed, reviewed operational progress, aligned on strategic priorities, and identified growth opportunities.

The Embassy of Switzerland in Nairobi-funded PSPH project also supports partners in convening targeted networking events to strengthen referral systems, enhance matchmaking among service providers, and bring together healthcare professionals and market actors to reduce fragmentation across โ€™s health sector. We are happy to have participated in one with Bushra Hospital.

Growing peer referrals and patient testimonials at Bushra Hospital signal increasing trust, stronger coordination, and durable market confidence.

Healthcare financing in Somalia is fast-changing. And the private sector is leading the charge.

Through the Embassy of Switzerland in Nairobi-funded PSPH programme implemented by DT Global in partnership with the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) & the Somali Research and Development Institute, the Bajaj Kaabe initiative is now expanding to Baidoa.

With PSPH support, TIIROW HOSPITAL has launched a dedicated package offering low-income Bajaj drivers and their families 50% discounted healthcare upon registration.

In Phase One, the hospital targets 1,000 drivers, with expansion planned thereafter. On the ground, PSPH intervention managers supported outreach efforts to drive enrolment across the city.

Building on a model that has enrolled 2,600+ drivers at just $5 per year in Mogadishu, this initiative is reshaping access, affordability, and insurance innovation, unlocking sustainable, market-based healthcare for Somaliaโ€™s informal workforce.

Our Intervention Managers, Dr. Jamal Hussein and Maryan Abdulkadir Ahmed, took to the streets of Baidoa to demonstrate the power of the private sector in transforming healthcare. Have a look ๐Ÿ‘‡
