A demi plié is one of the most fundamental movements in ballet. The word comes from French—“demi” meaning “half” and “plié” meaning “bent”—so it literally means “half bend.”

What it is

A demi plié is a controlled bending of the knees while keeping:

Heels flat on the floor
Spine upright and aligned
Turnout maintained from the hips

It’s done in all the main ballet positions (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th).

Tips for fixing rips and runs in tights

Fixing rips and runs in tights depends on how big the damage is—but you can stop them from getting worse and even hide them pretty well.

Here’s how:

🧵 For small runs (laddering)
• Use clear nail polish
Dab a tiny bit at both ends of the run. This stops it from spreading further.

• Hairspray trick
Spray lightly over the run to temporarily hold fibers in place (great if you’re out and about).
🪡 For small holes

• Sew it gently
Use a very fine needle and matching thread. Make tiny stitches to pull the fabric together—don’t pull too tight or it will pucker.

• Fabric glue
Apply a small amount on the inside of the tights and press the edges together.

✨ For bigger tears

• Patch from the inside
Use a sheer fabric patch or even a piece from old tights. Glue or sew it behind the tear.

💡 Prevention tips

• Keep nails smooth (snags are the #1 cause)
• Wash tights in a laundry bag
• Air dry instead of using a dryer
• Store them rolled, not tossed loosely
