🫴The phrase "slipped disc"' refers to a common misconception about spinal disc herniation. People often describe herniated discs as "slipped discs," implying that the discs move out of place. In reality, intervertebral discs, which are the cushioning structures between the vertebrae in the spine, don't slip or move out of place. Instead, the outer layer of the disc can tear, and the inner gel-like substance can protrude or herniate, potentially causing pain by pressing on nearby nerves.
🫴Anatomy of the Spine and Discs
The human spine is composed of 24 vertebrae stacked on top of each other, creating the vertebral column. Between each pair of vertebrae lies an intervertebral disc.
These discs serve several functions:
• Cushioning: They act as shock absorbers, reducing the impact on the spine from daily activities
• Flexibility: They allow for flexibility and movement of the spine, enabling bending, twisting, and other motions.
Each intervertebral disc has two main parts:
• Nucleus Pulposus: The inner core, which is soft and gel-like. (More like chewing gum)
• Annulus Fibrosus: The outer layer, which is tough and fibrous, providing structure and protection for the inner core.
🫴When a disc herniates.
1. Degeneration: Over time, discs can lose water content and become less flexible, making them more prone to injury.
2. Tear or Rupture: The annulus fibrosus can develop tears or cracks, allowing the nucleus pulposus to push out.
3. Protrusion: The inner gel-like substance can protrude or bulge out of the disc.
‼️This is what is commonly but inaccurately referred to as a "slipped disc."
🫴Symptoms of a Herniated Disc:
• Pain: Localised or radiating pain, often in the lower back or neck. Pain can also radiate down the arms or legs if the herniation compresses a nerve.
• Numbness and Tingling: Affected nerves can cause these sensations in the areas they serve.
• Weakness: Muscles served by compressed nerves may weaken, leading to difficulties in movement or decreased coordination
Discs don't slip and they never will‼️
