In a groundbreaking medical milestone, MIOT International has successfully performed a liver transplant on Aminath Naifa, a 55-year-old Maldivian patient, making it the 1st case in the World where such a procedure was carried out on a patient with the extremely rare anti-Kidd Jk(b) antibody. It is a potentially dangerous immunohematological condition where the immune system causes damage to the blood component.
This particular antibody is notoriously difficult to identify during routine blood screening, as it typically exists in very low titres and often goes undetected. With the specialised immunohaematology test, experts from the MIOT Department of Transfusion Medicine were able to detect the presence of the anti-Kidd Jk(b) antibody. Had this antibody gone unnoticed, it could have led to fatality.
Typically, a liver transplant necessitates approximately 12 to 15 units of blood. However, in this rare and complex case, sourcing a sufficient volume of compatible blood proved particularly challenging.
To overcome this, the surgery was performed precisely with minimum blood loss, using only 3 units of blood. The surgical team employed ROTEM (Rotational Thromboelastometry), an innovative technology that provides real-time visualisation of the blood's clotting. Driven by MIOT’s cutting-edge technology and the coordinated efforts of transfusion medicine and liver transplant experts, the transplant was completed without complications.
