When a student shared that the practice felt easier, my heart softened. It’s not just about having a good day on the mat—it’s about something within beginning to align.

Ease in practice doesn’t always come from strength or flexibility. It often comes when resistance starts to dissolve. When we stop striving, and start listening. When the body becomes less of a battlefield and more of a doorway.

In that moment, asana stops being a goal and becomes a mirror—reflecting a deeper state of being. One that moves with breath, with presence, and with trust in the unfolding.

the essence of Mysore-style self-practice: students deeply immersed in their own process, each exploring different stages of asana with mindful attention. The use of props like chairs, blocks, and wall support reflects a thoughtful, intelligent approach—one that prioritizes self-awareness and sustainability over performance.

Heart Over Hype : Backbend with purpose, not pressure. Discover your unique curve.

In this workshop, we will explore the what, why, and how of backbending.

Why do we bend? What does it mean to open the front body while strengthening the back?
Why does each body bend so differently—and how can we honor those differences?

Together, we’ll look into key anatomical principles that support safe and sustainable backbending. You’ll be guided through individual exploration to understand your spine, discover your unique range, and develop motivation for a healthy, integrated practice.

We’ll also explore different ways to approach backbending—drawing from both dynamic and therapeutic traditions. Through variations, prop work, breath-centered movement, and mindful transitions, you’ll gain practical tools to meet your backbend from where you are.

Sattvic Moon

A gentle, flowing form that weaves Yin Yoga with Vinyasa, inspired by Chandra Krama—the Moon Sequence developed to bring harmony to body, mind, and spirit. This practice balances effort and ease, activity and stillness, movement and meditation. Rooted in universal yogic principles—presence, surrender, balance, and inner listening—Chandra Krama invites a sattvic (pure, balanced) state of being.

It’s been 15 years since the journey with Matthew Sweeney began—starting with the Moon Sequence and Ashtanga back in 2010. Moon felt like a gift—a quiet companion that softened the sharp edges of intensity, offering steadiness, nourishment, and space to listen within.

As VKM (Vinyasa Krama Mandiram) evolved, so did I.
Each sequence brought something new: alignment that made sense, strength that supported rather than strained, and transitions that felt like breath.
From preparing the hips for Padmasana to cultivating the shoulders for deep backbends, VKM shaped the way I move, live, and teach.

Now feels like the right time to share this path with others.

✨ Join me for the Moon Sequence Series
From the grounding of Sattvic Moon, the quiet introspection of New Moon, to the opening and support of Shoulder Moon—
This is a space to slow down, restore, and reconnect with practice in a whole new way.

🌿Welcome to Ashtanga Samasthiti Shala

At Ashtanga Samasthiti, we offer three core practices:
🌿Ashtanga Yoga,
🌿Vinyasa Krama Mandiram (VKM) by Matthew Sweeney
🌿Pranayama.

Our approach centers around self-practice, compassionate guidance, and deep listening to the body. We welcome practitioners of all backgrounds, supporting each individual to build a sustainable and personally meaningful path of yoga.

🌿Ashtanga Yoga – Our Approach

At our shala, Ashtanga is taught as a living, evolving practice that honors the traditional method while embracing intelligent adaptation. We guide each student based on their individual structure, needs, and stage of life.

Our teaching draws inspiration from Iyengar alignment principles, encouraging precision, mindful adjustments, and the use of props where helpful. We move slowly and steadily, supporting students in building a solid foundation—physically, mentally, and energetically.

Pranayama is woven into the practice to deepen breath awareness, support nervous system regulation, and help integrate the inner and outer work of yoga. Rather than rushing through series, we emphasize the quality of presence over quantity of postures.

🌿Vinyasa Krama Mandiram (VKM) by Matthew Sweeney

This system offers a set of therapeutic, adaptive sequences that support practitioners across various needs and phases of practice with pranayama as a mandatory :
• Sattvic Moon – The Moon Sequence
A calming flow combining yin and vinyasa, inviting presence and softness.
• New Moon – Amavasya Krama
A restorative sequence using props to support the hips, inner awareness, and deep rest.
• Shoulder Moon – Skanda Krama
A sequence for shoulder and upper back mobility, ideal for releasing tension and enhancing breath.
• Lion Cub Sequence
Therapeutic, grounding, and revealing of imbalances—supports joint stability and asymmetrical alignment.
• Lion Sequence
Strengthens legs, opens hips and thoracic spine, and gently prepares for backbending.
• Sunshine Sequence – Atapa Krama
A modified Primary Series with more balance and accessibility, offering a safer and sustainable approach for long-term practice.

🌿Pranayama – The Breath of Awareness

Pranayama is not separate from our asana—it is the thread that connects, stabilizes, and transforms.

Whether as part of a sequence or practiced on its own, pranayama guides students inward, builds emotional resilience, and fosters meditative clarity.

🌿A Practice of Wholeness and Community

At Ashtanga Samasthiti, yoga is a way of being. Our aim is to help you build your inner temple—a place of clarity, compassion, and strength—so that you can move through the world with openness and joy.
We nurture a supportive, inclusive community, where practice is not just physical, but a shared journey of learning, connection, and living yoga with heart.
