SMRU/BHF Commemorates Professor Sir Nicholas John White OBE KCMG FRS
(1951–2026)
On 10 February 2026 at 11:00 am, SMRU/BHF commemorated the passing of Professor Sir Nicholas John White at the SMRU/BHF office in Mae Ramat District, Tak Province, with more than 100 participants in attendance.
The day began with a merit-making ceremony at Don Kaew Temple, where SMRU/BHF staff offered a meal to Buddhist monks in his dedication. Participants then gathered at the SMRU/BHF open-air garden area for the memorial program. The ceremony included welcome remarks by Ms. Jindaporn Wirachonphaophong and an opening speech by Prof. François Nosten. A candle lighting prayer was led by Pastor Adul Surin, followed by a presentation on Professor White’s life and contributions by Dr. Aung Pyae Phyo. A memorial video and heartfelt tributes from management, team, and a personal tribute from Dr. Ronatrai Reungweerayut (Advisor to the Director, Chularat Mae Sot Hospital), honoring his remarkable legacy. The commemoration concluded with a moment of silence accompanied by the soft coos of the pigeons, a beautiful choir song, closing remarks, and the laying of floral tributes.
Professor Nick White was Professor of Tropical Medicine at the University of Oxford and Mahidol University in Thailand. He was a central figure in the development of MORU and its sister unit, the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) in Vietnam. In these endeavours, he was supported by the Wellcome Trust throughout his career.
Nick was the visionary behind the transition of the Shoklo Malaria Research Unit (SMRU) to the Borderland Health Foundation (BHF). Forty years ago, it was his original idea to establish a research group to assist people in the Karen refugee camps, which laid the foundation for what later became the SMRU. He placed great importance on training and collaboration, mentoring generations of clinicians and scientists across Southeast Asia, including many at SMRU and throughout Thailand. His leadership strengthened local research capacity and empowered colleagues to become leaders in their own right.
Over the years, he guided SMRU, and the vast majority of the good research ideas were the result of discussions with Nick. His work was vast, helping to treat malaria, melioidosis, and dengue fever. He wrote over 1,000 scientific papers and led the World Health Organization (WHO) committees that set the global standards for treating malaria.
While he will be deeply missed, his work has saved millions of lives, and his legacy lives on through the many students, colleagues, and communities he inspired.

เมื่อวันที่ 10 กุมภาพันธ์ พ.ศ. 2569 เวลา 11:00 น. หน่วยวิจัยมาลาเรียโซโกล (SMRU) และมูลนิธิเดอะ บอร์เดอร์แลนด์ เฮลท์ (BHF) ได้จัดพิธีบำเพ็ญกุศลและรำลึกถึงการจากไปของ ศาสตราจารย์เซอร์ นิโคลัส จอห์น ไวท์ ณ สำนักงาน SMRU/BHF อำเภอแม่ระมาด จังหวัดตาก โดยมีผู้เข้าร่วมพิธีมากกว่า 100 ท่าน
ลำดับพิธีเริ่มต้นด้วยการทำบุญตักบาตร ณ วัดดอนแก้ว โดยคณะเจ้าหน้าที่ SMRU/BHF ได้ร่วมถวายภัตตาหารเพลแด่พระภิกษุสงฆ์เพื่ออุทิศส่วนกุศลให้แก่ผู้วายชนม์ จากนั้นผู้เข้าร่วมพิธีได้รวมตัวกัน ณ บริเวณสวนในร่มของสำนักงาน SMRU/BHF เพื่อร่วมพิธีรำลึก โดยมีการกล่าวต้อนรับโดย คุณจินดาพร -
วีรชนเผ่าพงษ์ และกล่าวเปิดงานโดย ศาสตราจารย์ ฟรองซัวส์ นอสเทน
ภายในงานมีพิธีจุดเทียนอธิษฐานนำโดย ศาสนาจารย์อดุลย์ สุรินทร์ ตามด้วยการนำเสนอชีวประวัติและผลงานอันทรงคุณค่าของศาสตราจารย์เซอร์ นิโคลัส โดย ดร. อ่อง เพียว พิว นอกจากนี้ยังมีการฉายวิดีทัศน์รำลึก และการกล่าวไว้อาลัยจากคณะผู้บริหาร ทีมงาน รวมถึงการกล่าวสดุดีจาก นายแพทย์ รณไตร เรืองวีรยุทธ (ที่ปรึกษาผู้อำนวยการโรงพยาบาลจุฬารัตน์แม่สอด) เพื่อเป็นเกียรติแก่คุณูปการอันยิ่งใหญ่ที่ท่านได้ฝากไว้ พิธีปิดท้ายด้วยการสงบนิ่งไว้อาลัยท่ามกลางเสียงขับร้องประสานเสียงอันไพเราะ และการร่วมวางดอกไม้เพื่อระลึกถึงผู้จากไป
ประวัติและผลงานโดยสังเขป ศาสตราจารย์เซอร์ นิโคลัส จอห์น ไวท์ ดำรงตำแหน่งศาสตราจารย์ด้านเวชศาสตร์เขตร้อนแห่งมหาวิทยาลัยออกซ์ฟอร์ด และมหาวิทยาลัยมหิดล ท่านเป็นบุคคลสำคัญในการก่อตั้งหน่วยวิจัยมหิดล-ออกซ์ฟอร์ด (MORU) และหน่วยวิจัยทางคลินิกมหาวิทยาลัยออกซ์ฟอร์ด (OUCRU) ในประเทศเวียดนาม โดยได้รับความสนับสนุนจาก Wellcome Trust มาโดยตลอดเส้นทางการทำงาน
ท่านคือผู้วางรากฐานและมีวิสัยทัศน์ในการเปลี่ยนผ่านจากหน่วยวิจัยมาลาเรียโซโกล (SMRU) ไปสู่มูลนิธิเดอะ บอร์เดอร์แลนด์ เฮลท์ (BHF) เมื่อ 40 ปีก่อน ท่านเป็นผู้ริเริ่มแนวคิดในการก่อตั้งกลุ่มวิจัยเพื่อช่วยเหลือ
ผู้หนีภัยจากการสู้รบตามแนวชายแดน ซึ่งกลายมาเป็นรากฐานสำคัญของหน่วยงาน SMRU ในเวลาต่อมา ท่านให้ความสำคัญอย่างยิ่งกับการฝึกอบรมและการสร้างความร่วมมือ โดยได้เป็นอาจารย์ที่ปรึกษาและสร้างบุคลากรทางการแพทย์และนักวิทยาศาสตร์รุ่นใหม่มากมายทั่วเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ รวมถึงใน SMRU และประเทศไทย ซึ่งช่วยเสริมสร้างศักยภาพด้านการวิจัยในระดับท้องถิ่นให้เข้มแข็ง
ตลอดระยะเวลาหลายปีที่ผ่านมา ท่านได้เป็นผู้นำทางความคิดให้แก่ SMRU โดยผลงานวิจัยที่ดีเยี่ยม ส่วนใหญ่นั้นล้วนเป็นผลมาจากการหารือร่วมกับท่าน งานของท่านครอบคลุมทั้งการรักษาโรคมาลาเรีย โรคไข้ดิน (Melioidosis) และไข้เลือดออก ท่านมีผลงานทางวิชาการมากกว่า 1,000 ฉบับ และเป็นประธานคณะกรรมการองค์การอนามัยโลก (WHO) ในการกำหนดมาตรฐานสากลสำหรับการรักษาโรคมาลาเรีย
แม้การจากไปของท่านจะเป็นความสูญเสียครั้งยิ่งใหญ่ แต่ผลงานของท่านได้ช่วยชีวิตผู้คนนับล้านไว้ และมรดกทางความคิดของท่านจะยังคงอยู่ผ่านเหล่านักเรียน เพื่อนร่วมงาน และชุมชนต่าง ๆ ที่ท่านได้สร้างแรงบันดาลใจไว้ตลอดไป
