Deep Dive into a Silent Threat Beneath the Earth:

What People in Southern Thailand Should Know About the Klong Marui–Ranong Fault System 🌊

In the past, many people believed that
“Southern Thailand is safe from earthquakes.”

However, based on the increasing seismic activity recorded continuously—especially in early 2026—these events may be an important signal from nature.

Beneath the land we walk on lies something called an “Active Fault.”

This article gathers information from several perspectives:
• Geology
• Earth science
• Hydrology
• Disaster preparedness

The goal is to help people understand the mechanisms of our planet, remain calm, and be prepared with awareness.

🔬 1. Secrets Beneath Our Feet: The Scientific and Geological Dimension

Southern Thailand lies along the edge of the Eurasian Plate, which constantly experiences stress caused by the collision and subduction of the Indo-Australian Plate beneath the Andaman Sea.

This compression has created two major fault systems that run roughly parallel:

Klong Marui Fault Zone

The Klong Marui Fault Zone extends approximately 140–150 kilometers across land.

Orientation: Northeast – Southwest

Movement type:
A left-lateral strike-slip fault, meaning the two sides of the earth’s crust slide horizontally past each other in opposite directions.

As tectonic stress slowly accumulates—sometimes only millimeters at a time—the crust eventually reaches its limit. When that happens, it fractures and releases energy in the form of seismic waves, which we experience as earthquakes.

🗺️ 2. Impact Area: Provinces to Watch

These fault lines pass through four key provinces:

📌 Surat Thani

The fault crosses Ban Ta Khun and Phanom districts.
This area frequently experiences small releases of seismic energy.

📌 Krabi

The fault passes through Ao Luek District, where shallow earthquakes often occur, making tremors easier for residents to feel.

📌 Phang Nga

The fault runs through Thap Put, Mueang, and Thai Mueang districts before extending toward Phang Nga Bay and the Andaman Sea.

📌 Ranong

This province is intersected by the Ranong Fault, which is geologically connected and can influence seismic activity along the Klong Marui Fault.

In addition, moderate earthquakes can transmit seismic waves through rock layers, allowing tremors to be felt in nearby economic and historical centers such as Phuket and Nakhon Si Thammarat.

💧 3. Water and Earthquakes: The Hydrological Dimension

Water and earthquakes can be linked in unexpected ways.

One phenomenon relevant to southern Thailand is:

Reservoir-Induced Seismicity (RIS)

The Klong Marui Fault runs near Ratchaprapha Dam.

The enormous mass of water stored in the reservoir can increase pore water pressure, allowing water to infiltrate underground rock layers and “lubricate” nearby faults.

This can cause small movements along the fault more frequently.

Interestingly, many geologists consider this beneficial, because it gradually releases built-up stress rather than allowing it to accumulate until a large earthquake occurs.

Importantly, the dam itself was designed to withstand strong seismic events.

Another factor to monitor is submarine faults extending into the Andaman Sea.
If vertical movement occurs beneath the ocean floor, it could disturb large water masses—one of the mechanisms that can generate Tsunami.

⚠️ 4. Secondary Hazards

Ground shaking is not the only danger. Earthquakes can trigger secondary hazards such as:

Landslides

Southern Thailand has steep mountains and heavy rainfall.
If an earthquake occurs when the soil is already saturated with water, shaking may trigger landslides or mudflows.

Liquefaction

In coastal areas with loose, water-saturated sandy soils, strong shaking can cause the ground to temporarily behave like a liquid.
This can lead to building subsidence or structural failure.

📊 5. Recent Situation (Early 2026)

Between February and March 2026, a phenomenon known as an Earthquake Swarm occurred in:

Khao Phang Subdistrict
Ban Ta Khun District
Surat Thani Province

More than 20 small earthquakes were recorded.
• Maximum magnitude: 3.5
• Depth: 1–4 km

While these tremors were clearly felt by residents, no major structural damage was reported.

🛡️ 6. Preparedness and Safety

We cannot stop nature, but we can prepare.

🏗️ Infrastructure

Buildings in seismic-risk areas should be designed according to earthquake-resistant construction standards, and homes should be inspected regularly.

🪑 The Three Safety Steps

During an earthquake remember:

Drop – Cover – Hold On
• Drop to the ground
• Take cover under a sturdy table
• Hold on and protect yourself from falling objects

🌊 Tsunami Awareness

If you are near the coast and feel strong shaking—strong enough that you cannot stand—or notice the sea suddenly receding, evacuate to higher ground immediately without waiting for an official warning.

📌 Final Thoughts

The Klong Marui Fault and the Ranong Fault are still geologically active.

Their movements are simply part of the natural processes of our planet.

Staying informed through reliable sources—such as the Earthquake Observation Division of the Thai Meteorological Department and the Department of Mineral Resources—and preparing calmly and wisely is the best protection for all of us. 💙
