What are the three levels of Salmonella control according to WHO guidelines?

Three essential levels:

• Pre-harvest: control Salmonella in food-producing animals, mainly pigs and poultry;
• During harvest: Avoid cross-contamination during slaughter and meat processing;
• Post-harvest: controlled during food preparation

Salstop® has been widely applied to control a broad spectrum of pathogens in high-risk raw materials and in finished feed. Moreover, by controlling Salmonella, other pathogens (e.g. E. coli, Campylobacter) will also be eradicated.

In much of the world, the use of antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs) is under increasing scrutiny. Unlike in the EU, in many countries AGP’s are being withdrawn with very short adaptation periods, leaving an urgent need for alternatives. Simultaneously, our industry is forced to reduce its impact on the environment as well as being less dependent on soybeans, maize and cereals, with their respective high prices. Sadly, without proper management, both challenges lead directly to losses in production efficiency, which is contradictory to our goal: an efficient and sustainable livestock industry.

While local, perhaps cheaper alternatives are introduced to replace conventual raw materials, they come with intestinal challenges, like gut viscosity, mycotoxins and antinutritional factors. Similarly, AGP-free production can only be achieved if there is a holistic collaboration between farm management, feed formulation, genetics and anticoccidial/vaccination programs. Otherwise, it leads to digestive disorders and veterinary treatments. Hereby, it explains why managing gut health contributes to an efficient and sustainable production. The destruction of the gut epithelial wall by inflammation and diseases leads to undigested feed, which causes pathogenic microflora to flourish. This creates a vicious cycle that impacts feed efficiency, food quality and animal welfare.

Supplementing animal feed with N-Force contributes to sustainability:
• As an alternative in AGP-free production;
• By reduced risks of digestive disorders when utilizing more local ingredients;
• By healthier animals with better zootechnical performance.

The ongoing and increasing pressure on our industry to further reduce its on the environment and its exploitation of valuable scarce natural resources, is influencing more and more feed manufacturers worldwide. They are continuously pushed to use more alternative and local ingredients to replace major commodity feed raw materials, such as conventional cereal grains, legumes (e.g. soy), fats, oils and inorganic phosphates.

The key to success here lies in adopting strategies that make better use of such more sustainable and affordable feedstuffs. For instance, among other factors like feed safety, an important challenge is safeguarding feed digestion and gut health to ensure animal performance is not compromised. Such less ideal vegetal ingredients – incl. byproducts like bran or hulls and some circular ingredients from other industries like DDGS or pulp – namely are of considerably lower nutritional value to both poultry and pigs. They usually supply higher levels of anti-nutritional factors in the diet, such as indigestible Non-Starch Polysaccharides (i.e. NSP fibres) and phytic acid with bound phosphorus, next to a lower quality protein fraction. Consequently, this implies a higher need for NSP fibre- and plant phytate degrading enzymes in the monogastric animal diet than before.

Thus, crucial in this sustainability effort is choosing the right digestive feed enzymes for the envisaged set of specific raw materials. For instance, the Zympex® range of supplemental enzymes has shown in numerous field trials to maintain animal performance, when reformulating the diet with a broad variety of less digestible plant feedstuffs. In conjunction with facilitating the use of more local and affordable ingredients, another major contribution of Zympex® to sustainability is significantly reducing the excretion of polluting phosphorus and nitrogen into the environment by the animal.
