Highlights on AI Trends in Sustainable Healthcare by Assist. Prof. Dr. Jirayos Chintanadilok, Sleep Medicine Specialist, at The Next Humanity stage, SCBX Next Tech, 4th Floor, Siam Paragon
On September 10, Assist. Prof. Dr. Jirayos Chintanadilok, a specialist in Sleep Medicine, participated in a panel discussion at The Next Humanity, a platform designed to bring together experts from diverse fields to explore how artificial intelligence (AI) can be applied in ways that align with ethical principles and uphold human dignity.
Dr. Jirayos joined a panel discussion on “Longevity: Teaching AI for a Healthy Aging Society”, where he emphasized sleep disorders as a critical health issue that significantly impacts well-being in today’s world.
“Today, technologies including AI are being integrated into healthcare to support preliminary health assessments. Smartwatches, for example, can monitor various health metrics though their accuracy varies by device. In clinical practice, AI serves as a valuable assistant, enhancing precision, but it must always be used under the supervision of a specialist.
“Medical data in every specialty is vast, and each patient may have an extensive medical history. The accuracy and effectiveness of AI depend on the patient’s condition and how well the AI has been trained with relevant data for that disease or treatment.”
Dr. Jirayos showcased Sleepio, an internationally developed sleep improvement program by Big Health, designed to tackle the root causes of insomnia in adults. The program guides users through a six-week course that gathers detailed information on their sleep habits, including weekly CBT-I (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia) assessments, sleep tracking, and various AI-powered support features. Medically validated, Sleepio has been shown to reduce the frequency of doctor visits. However, Dr. Jirayos recommends using it alongside conventional therapy and guidance from healthcare professionals (non-AI) to enhance treatment effectiveness.
He also discussed ongoing efforts to combine medical science with technology to regenerate cells and organs, aiming to overcome aging and provide innovative solutions for organ transplantation.
“When asked whether AI will improve our quality of life in the future, the answer is undoubtedly yes. AI can help make human life easier, guiding us to take the right actions while avoiding the wrong ones. It can also simplify complex multi-step processes, such as medical examinations, making them more straightforward and efficient.”
Before concluding the panel, Dr. Jirayos emphasized the importance of preventive healthcare for the future. Treatment is important, but prevention is even more so; identifying problems early is always better. If technology can help humans enhance preventive care, it will ultimately improve the overall quality of life.
