The Dialogue of Mountain and Sea:
A Sacred Cycle of Reciprocity
I watched a program where a chef journeyed to indigenous lands to learn their way of cook and fish.
It stirred memories of a book I hold dear:
Braiding Sweetgrass
A botanist & indigenous —weaves together precision of science with ancient wisdom of indigenous, the reciprocity btw humans & nature , teaching us how other beings are our mentors
A chapter, Burning Cascade Head, moved me profoundly.
Tradition set fire to the highland meadows as winter turns to spring.
The glow of fire serve as "Home Signal" for salmon—their home is prepared to welcome their return from ocean.
After honoring and sharing first salmon, the people collect bone.
In a ceremony of gratitude, they prepare feast of land and sea—berries, elk, fish
They believe the salmon come to land using their "Bodies as Canoes."
When the bones return to the water, their spirits don their skin once more and swim back to the great ocean.
This ritual allows the salmon to tell their kin:
"The people here respect us; they cherish this gift."
Thus, a cycle is formed, ensuring the salmon will always "respond to the invitation" to return.
The scorched earth nourishes the soil;
The fish bones provide infinite nutrients for the forest, the plants, and our brothers, the bear and the wolf.
The dense forest, in turn, protects the cool, clear waters for the next generation of salmon.
Fire becomes a sacred tool for humans, as guardians, to maintain the universe's eternal rhythm.
And in the same way, are our bodies not the canoes
That carry our souls through this earthly journey?
I recall my travels in Kumano Kodo and Hokkaido, Japan, hearing tales of the bear’s spirit offering its fur and meat to humans.
When we respect and take only what is needed, the spirits of the animals remain drawn to our world, wishing to return and wander with us once more.
I have heard Shamanic stories of the initiation into independence—facing one’s spirit animal in the wild to reclaim power.
Friends from Brunei and Malaysia speak of the mountains as sacred, potent realms where one may become lost or even vanish if they enter without reverence.
My friends in Bali share how every family, even when moving far away, immediately seeks a connection to a natural water source.
Every culture holds a unique lineage within the mountains and the sea.
These photos are from a road trip Kyle and I took years ago along the West Coast of North America.
Beneath the ancient, towering Redwoods, along the coastlines of kelp forests and the migratory paths of whales—this is the very land spoken of in that book.
Before the mountain and the sea, we are but small, fleeting beings.
Your heart cannot help but ache at such beauty, wishing only to pass this wonder forward.
For true guardianship is not about possession;
It is about participating in this eternal cycle.
As we celebrate Christmas—a time of resurrection and redemption in Christian tradition, and a universal season of gratitude and sharing—we also honor the ancient roots of the Saturnalia and Winter Solstice festivals.
Regardless of the faith or values you hold, let this be a time to refill your heart with joy, peace, and love for those around you and for the world itself.
May your rest, your time with loved ones, and the inspirations from your travels
Infuse your 2026 beginning with love and strength. 🎄
