💬 What’s the Hardest Part of Spinal Cord Injury Recovery?
In honor of Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month, we asked four Verita Neuro patients with C4, C5, C6 C7 and T7 Spinal Cord Injuries to share the toughest challenges they faced.

From the fight to adjust to a new life, to hearing “there is no hope,” to finding strength through loved ones. Their answers remind us that the hardest part of SCI isn’t always physical.

👇 Now, it’s your turn! We would love to hear about your experience.
What has been the hardest part of your journey? Share it in the comments below. Your words might help someone else feel less alone.

Emmanuelle, a T7 complete spinal cord injury patient from France, is currently with us in Thailand for her remapping session. She first received Epidural Stimulation and LamiSpine treatment with us in 2022 after sustaining her injury in a car accident in 2006. Before the treatments, she had no movement below her injury level and frequently experienced UTIs.

After her first visit to Thailand, she noticed significant improvements in her body balance and bladder control, which allowed her to stop using a catheter. She was also surprised by how much progress she had made in muscle strength and regained movement, especially considering her injury occurred in 2006.

In this interview, Emmanuelle shares her story—the challenges she has overcome and the progress she has experienced. “I experience it as a rebirth,” she says, reflecting on her journey with the treatments at Verita Neuro.

✍ Letters to My Newly Injured Self
We asked three patients to share a message to their newly injured selves, for Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month. All three surprised us with their answers. Contrary to what most would expect, they focus on what they’ve gained, not what they lost.

Sofia (a C5–C6 complete injury patient) has achieved milestones her newly injured self never imagined: driving, swimming, working, and even getting married. She’s also our Patient Representative at Verita Neuro in Mexico 🇲🇽, supporting others on their recovery journeys.

Karen (a C4–C5 complete injury patient) has regained movement in her arms, can stand with support, and has built meaningful connections she never would have made otherwise.

Nikita (a C4 complete injury patient) emphasizes his newfound mindset: he’s more self-confident, resilient and now believes he can overcome any challenge.

Sofia, Karen and Nikita were all treated with Epidural Stimulation at Verita Neuro in Thailand 🇹🇭.

It’s likely you saw Darka’s journey with us last year when she traveled to Thailand 🇹🇭 for treatment. After sustaining a C5 complete spinal cord injury in 2021 from a fall into the ocean, she was determined to regain as much function as possible. As a quadriplegic, Darka qualified for the implantation of two Epidural Stimulators and stayed with us for 1.5 months of intensive rehabilitation.

Now, after three and a half years, she has seen movement in her leg for the first time, an incredible milestone that fills her with hope for walking independently again.

Therapists Strength & Stimulate: Trunk Control
Patient: Shane, T4 Complete Spinal Cord Injury
Physical Therapist: Alvaro

Physical Therapist Alvaro explains how activating Shane’s abdominal and lower back muscles with Epidural Stimulation helps improve trunk control and extension. When the stimulator is off, Shane’s trunk tends to move forward when lifting his arms. With the program on, his trunk remains stable and strong, allowing him to maintain better posture during movement.

These exercises are key for building core strength and stability, supporting Shane’s progress toward greater independence.
