Bangkok Shambhala Meditation Center

Bangkok Shambhala Meditation Center Our center offers weekly public meditation, a core curriculum of Buddhist and Shambhala teachings, as well as training in advanced contemplative practices.

Shambhala vision is rooted in the contemplative teachings of Buddhism, yet is a fresh expression of the spiritual journey for our time; it is available to practitioners of any tradition. The Bangkok Shambhala Meditation Group is part of an international community of over 200 urban meditation and rural retreat centers founded by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and further developed by his son and lineage holder Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche. We invite you to explore our diverse programs designed to help people of all traditions discover their inherent sanity, gentleness and humor.

We were blessed to have Tersé Wangchen Dorje Rinpoche stop in to the Shambhala center here recently, on his way back to China after completing a 3 month meditation retreat in Phuket. Rinpoche specifically came to Bangkok because he wanted to connect with the lineage of Trungpa Rinpoche, and meet the Shambhala community here! It was very auspicious timing indeed. Thanks to everyone who joined! Tashi delek... May it be of benefit🙏🙏🙏

Working with annoying sounds in your meditation practice... How to unravel them so you don't get hooked and disturbed by them.

Dear Shambhala community,

We would like to invite you to an emergency community meeting on Wednesday 11 March to discuss the future and continued existence of the Shambhala Meditation Center in Bangkok. A few days ago our landlord informed us that the building is under new management, and as a result, our rent will increase by 7000 Baht per month, effective immediately! We need to either move out or pay the higher rent.

Over the past year, the center has been operating with significant financial challenges. We have been sustained almost entirely by donations, and despite attempts to introduce paid courses and encourage increased contributions, the income has not been sufficient to cover our ongoing costs. Several expenses have been personally covered by Jamie to help keep the center running, for which we don't have enough money to reimburse. Under these circumstances an increase in rent is not sustainable for us.

Maintaining the center requires consistent daily effort, and more volunteer support is needed to keep the space functioning, not to mention expanding the programs & classes we offer.

Because of these circumstances, we feel it is important to come together as a community and openly discuss the way forward. During this meeting we hope to openly explore questions such as:

What's your vision for the Shambhala Center in Bangkok going forward?

Would it be better for us to stay here or relocate? Possible locations or ideas to relocate?

What ideas do you have on how to increase the financial support to a level that's sustainable to keep the center open?

Are people willing to volunteer time to help keep the organization functioning?

The intention of this meeting is to have an open and constructive conversation about what the Shambhala center means to our community and what future might be possible together.

Meeting details:

Wednesday, 11 March

18:30 PM – approximately 20:00 PM

Shambhala Meditation Center

If this community and practice space has been meaningful to you, your presence and voice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and best regards,

Today is the lunar calendar new year, which is celebrated widely in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition as Losar. This year we're entering into the Fire Horse year.

In Tibetan astrology, the Year of the Horse is associated with qualities of energy, independence, optimism, free-spiritedness – and being very active. It is a time where natural leadership qualities can easily emerge and come to the fore. It is also a year during which there is a strong desire for freedom and self-reliance is a primary trait, as horses do not like being constrained by rules, routines, or authority and prefer to follow their own path. The element of Fire in the upcoming Year of the Horse brings us a year that could feel even more intense and dynamic, with great enthusiasm for new projects and activities. It could also mean more impulsivity and volatility, so one should take care to maintain a good seat of steadiness and strength, while still embracing the natural zest and passion of the Fire Horse Year.

Sending all good wishes, and many blessings! 💛 ✨🌟💫

The Meditation in Everyday Life course provides students with the introductory tools and teachings for working with meditation in our everyday life while working and managing our responsibilities and connections. With simple instructions and support, mindfulness meditation practice can become part of our lives, bringing great stability, strength and clarity. We experience what happens when we stop avoiding ourselves, and start simply being with whatever is going on in our lives. Through this course, students learn to cultivate courage and stability in the daily complexities of jobs, responsibilities, relationships, and the everyday desires, concerns and uncertainties we all face.

Class description:
Class 1: Introduction to Meditation: Basic Goodness and Becoming Familiar with Equanimity
Class 2: Using Mindfulness and Awareness to Gather the Mind and Work with Emotions
Class 3: Overcoming the Obstacles to Meditation
Class 4: Willing to Open: The Genuine Heart
Class 5: Meditation as a Transformational Tool for Society

In every class there will be periods of group meditation, presentations on the topics listed above, discussions, dialogues and contemplative exercises. There are also readings and study material to support and supplement the curriculum taught in the classes. Students should plan to attend every class, if possible. The first and last class are especially important.

Join us for a meditation, reading and discussion class every Wednesday evening from 6:30pm - 8pm. Join by Google Meet or attend the class in person at the Shambhala Center.

This weekly event includes group meditation, followed by reading of a chapter from the current book, followed by group discussion on the material,  plus refreshments and social time at the end.

This is a wonderful opportunity to meditate in a supportive group setting, learn about the principles of meditation, and to meet and mingle with fellow practitioners (bring your friends)! We welcome both newcomers and familiar faces. No previous experience needed. Come to one class, or come every week.

This is a drop-in session. No previous attendance, registration, or fee is required to attend. Suggested Donation 100 Baht (minimum). The Bangkok Shambhala Center (which is a Thai non-profit Association) remains open because of the ongoing generosity of our members and program participants.
