✨Gestational Diabetes in Thai Pregnant Women: New Insights

💎A new study from Thailand reveals that women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are more likely to be older, have higher pre-pregnancy BMI, and have a family history of diabetes. They also show elevated glucose, HbA1c, and lipid levels, with babies often born at higher birth weights. These findings underscore the importance of early screening and lifestyle interventions to safeguard the health of both mother and child. 💙

🔖Key Findings
🔹 Women with GDM were older, had higher BMI before pregnancy, and more often reported a family history of diabetes.
🔹 Clinical markers—including fasting glucose, HbA1c, cholesterol, and triglycerides—were significantly higher in the GDM group.
🔹 Babies of mothers with GDM had higher birth weights compared to those without GDM.

🪅New Study Sheds Light on Type 1 Diabetes in Thailand

🪩A nationwide study in Thailand has revealed that 34% of young-onset type 1 diabetes cases are autoantibody-negative—a significantly higher rate than reported in other regions. These findings provide new insights to improve diagnosis, treatment, and disease prediction in Southeast Asia.

🔹 The most common autoantibodies detected were GAD65 (56%), IA-2 (37%), and ZnT8 (33%).
🔹 Autoantibody-negative patients were typically diagnosed at an older age, with higher BMI and elevated C-peptide levels compared to autoantibody-positive patients.
🔹 Intriguingly, regional differences were observed, with the southern region showing a distinct autoantibody profile, a finding that could potentially revolutionize our understanding of type 1 diabetes in Thailand.
🔹 Women had a higher prevalence of type 1 diabetes than men (58% vs 42%).

Prof. Korapat Mayurasakorn, Dr. Phongthana Pasookhush, and Ms. Apinya Surawit of the Siriraj Center of Research Excellence for Diabetes and Obesity (SiCORE-DO), Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, on their latest publication in ScienceDirect Journal (June 27, 2025).

🧬 Their study on familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) in Thailand reveals that ~0.6% of Thais (≈1 in 170) may carry genetic variants linked to FH. The findings highlight both monogenic and polygenic contributions to LDL-C, paving the way for precision screening and lipid management in Thai populations.

🧠🌐 Siriraj Faculty Abroad at 'Metabolomics 2025' in the Czech Republic 🧠🌐
Associate Professor Sakda Khoomrung, PhD, Head of the Siriraj Center of Research Excellence – Metabolomics and Systems Biology (SiCORE-MSB), Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, participated in the "21st Annual Conference of the Metabolomics Society", held in Prague, Czech Republic, from June 22nd – 26th, 2025.
During the conference, Assoc. Prof. Khoomrung delivered a special lecture titled “Hands-on Metabolomics Data Processing, Analysis, and Metabolite Identification Using Metabox 2.0 and SiMD”. His participation underscores Siriraj’s commitment to advancing metabolomics research on the global stage and aims to enhance the Faculty’s international recognition and attract further research collaboration and funding.
The Metabolomics Society is an independent, non-profit organization founded in 2004, committed to advancing the field of metabolism-based research. With over 1,000 members in more than 40 countries, the Society serves as a global forum for collaboration and scientific exchange in the metabolomics community.
