🌏 PGT-A & Gender Selection Laws in Asia
PGT-A (Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidy) is widely used in IVF to help select embryos with a normal number of chromosomes. However, when it comes to using PGT-A for gender selection, legal regulations vary greatly across Asia — and most countries prohibit non-medical s*x selection.
Here’s a quick overview:
🇯🇵 Japan
Non-medical gender selection is not allowed. PGT is only used to avoid serious genetic conditions.
🇨🇳 China
Gender selection is strictly prohibited except for medical indications involving s*x-linked genetic diseases.
🇰🇷 South Korea
Only medical gender selection is allowed. Choosing a baby's s*x for personal or family balancing reasons is not legal.
🇸🇬 Singapore
Under the Ministry of Health regulations, gender selection is banned, even in private fertility clinics.
🇲🇾 Malaysia
Non-medical gender selection is not permitted, although some clinics may offer PGT-A for chromosomal screening with medical justification.
🇮🇳 India
S*x selection is strictly illegal under the PCPNDT Act, and violators face heavy penalties.
🇭🇰 Hong Kong
PGT-A is available, but gender selection for non-medical purposes is not allowed under government policy.
🇹🇭 Thailand
In Thailand, the use of PGT-A is allowed for medical purposes, such as screening for chromosomal abnormalities or preventing s*x-linked genetic diseases.
❗ However, gender selection for non-medical reasons (e.g. family balancing) is legally prohibited under the Protection of a Child Born by Medically Assisted Reproductive Technology Act, B.E. 2558 (2015).
This law prohibits the use of assisted reproductive technologies for selecting the s*x of a child unless there is a valid medical reason. Clinics and practitioners are required to follow strict ethical and legal standards.
