Transforming Knowledge into Impact : PCM49’s GI Health Fair

Today’s GI Health Fair, organized by second-year medical students (PCM49), brought together knowledge, creativity, and compassion under one roof!

After completing their Gastrointestinal System block, students translated their academic learning into real-world impact by creating fun, interactive booths to educate the public about common GI diseases.

This project-based learning initiative was designed not only to reinforce core medical knowledge but also to foster soft skills such as teamwork, communication, and empathy. Dressed in creative costumes and using engaging storytelling, our students made medical education accessible, enjoyable, and unforgettable for all participants.

It was a day full of energy, color, and connection—proving once again that medicine is not just science, but also an art of reaching people.

Learning Beyond the Classroom: PCM49’s Service Learning in Parasitology

At PCM, we believe that medical education goes beyond textbooks. As part of the Gastrointestinal block, operated by the Department of Parasitology, Phramongkutklao College of Medicine, our PCM49 students engaged in a meaningful service learning activity that combined core knowledge with community impact.

The project took place at the Phayathai Baby Home, where the investigation of parasitic infections was conducted by faculty supervisors with the assistance of our medical students. Stool examinations were performed for both staff and children, allowing for prompt identification and treatment of infections.

Our students also prepared and delivered health education sessions to help prevent future infections—engaging both caregivers and children in fun, informative ways.

In addition to the health services, the students and the Parent Association of PCM49 joined efforts to raise over 10,000 THB and collected essential donations including clothes, toys, and food supplies to support the children in the orphanage.

This is a powerful example of how we prepare our students not only with medical knowledge, but also with the values of empathy, service, and social responsibility.

Active Learning in Action!
This week, our PCM49 medical students explored the complexity of gastrointestinal diseases through Problem-Based Learning (PBL)—a powerful approach that blends clinical relevance with critical thinking.

Each small group of 10 students was guided by two expert facilitators—one from basic science and one from clinical medicine—to ensure a comprehensive and well-rounded learning experience.

With discussions, digital tools, and real-world scenarios, our students are developing into not only knowledgeable physicians but also skilled problem-solvers and team players.

📢 Proud moment for the Department of Parasitology at Phramongkutklao College of Medicine! 📢

Today, Prof. Maj. Gen. Mathirut Mungthin, M.D., Ph.D., and Assoc. Prof. Col. Phunlerd Piyaraj, M.D., MHS., Ph.D., were invited by the National Blood Center, Thai Red Cross Society, to share their expertise at the monthly academic conference. The topic? "Parasitic Infections from Blood Transfusion" – a critical discussion on the potential risks and new findings in blood donation.

We highlighted our groundbreaking research on malaria and leishmania infections within Thailand, sharing valuable insights with key national stakeholders. This includes the first epidemiologic study on leishmaniasis among blood donors in Thailand, an important first step toward potential modifications to the country’s blood donation policies. Our findings are expected to have a significant, positive impact on national health safety.

This conference has opened the door to new collaborations with the Thai Red Cross, reinforcing our shared commitment to benefiting the health of all Thais.

"Today, our students delved into the fascinating world of protozoa! 🎓🦠 Starting the day with insightful small group presentations, they later moved into the lab to apply their knowledge hands-on. Under the guidance of our dedicated mentors, they practiced the modified acid-fast staining technique to identify protozoa by themselves. It's always exciting to see our students engage so enthusiastically in both theory and practical learning. Great job, everyone! 👏 "

🔬 **Helminth Quiz Challenge at the Department of Parasitology!** 🔬

This week, our medical students at Phramongkutklao College of Medicine took part in an exciting **Helminth Quiz Challenge** after one week of studying parasitology. In this timed activity, students had just **30 minutes** to identify unknown helminths using their microscopes 🔍—a great opportunity to practice their psychomotor skills!

Each student’s findings were confirmed by our Parasitology experts to ensure accuracy and reinforce their learning. This activity not only tested their knowledge but also sharpened their microscope handling skills, which are essential for diagnosing parasitic infections in the field.

🎉 **Congratulations to all the students who successfully passed this quiz!** 🎉

At the Department of Parasitology, we’re committed to providing well-rounded, hands-on experiences that prepare our students for real-world medical challenges. 💪

🔬 Case Discussion and Active Learning Session in Parasitology! 🔬

Today, the Department of Parasitology at Phramongkutklao College of Medicine hosted an engaging case discussion session focused on **strongyloidiasis** and **opisthorchiasis. Our medical students participated in small group discussions through an active learning approach, where they presented their findings **in English**, giving them the stage to practice both scientific communication and language skills. 💬📚

Each small group was supported by at least two experts—one clinician and one parasitology specialist—ensuring comprehensive guidance and high-quality feedback. This dynamic session was further enriched through collaboration with renowned institutions such as **Mahidol University, the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Vajira Hospital,** and **Thammasat University Hospital**. 🤝🏥

This session was not only designed to enhance students' core parasitology knowledge but also to sharpen their **English communication skills, technology usage, evidence-based medicine** application, and **teamwork**—all critical competencies in modern medical practice. 📊🗣️🤝

At the Department of Parasitology, we are dedicated to creating interactive, well-supported learning environments that foster both academic growth and essential soft skills.
