Thyroid conditions, particularly Graves' disease, can cause an autoimmune disorder called thyroid eye disease (TED) which leads to eye problems. Symptoms include eye irritation, dryness, bulging, redness, light sensitivity, double vision, and difficulty moving the eyes. In severe cases, this can lead to vision loss.
Common effects of thyroid eye disease
Bulging eyes: Inflammation of tissues around the eyes can cause them to protrude.
Eyelid retraction: Eyelids may be pulled back, making the eyes appear wide or staring.
Irritation and dryness: Increased exposure can lead to a gritty feeling, dryness, watering, and redness.
Light sensitivity: Eyes can become more sensitive to light.
Double vision: Swelling of the eye muscles can limit eye movement and cause double vision.
Pain: Some people experience pain in or behind the eyes
