Some crazy times in Thailand recently. The unfortunate but somewhat predictable border conflict. Plus the ongoing changes in the broccoli rules, so we thought we would update on the current situation.
In terms of the border conflict, this article gives the real insight into what is happening and likely to happen. There has been lots of talk, speculation and media chatter, leaving alot of people confused and wondering what the outcome will be. Read this..

In terms of the Brocolli, the Ministry of Health are delaying implementatuon of the GACP rule which was due to come in on 1st August. This would freeze out all organic growers and small boutique growers, where most of the best flavours come from. They realise there is a huge issue with this, so they confirmed last week there will be additional categories of grower, not only GACP licensed facilites. This is great news.
In terms of the need for prescriptions, this is also being reconsidered as it enables blatent corruption. You will be able to purchase a fake prescription from unscrupulous operators in some areas and there are no checks and measures to combat this, so it does little to ensure medical use. It also takes away the previous rule to protect minors and pregant women etc. So the future of needing a prescription is contentious to say the least and the need for one is not backed by any law, so enforcment is a real issue.
Regarding the border conflict, if the military do take over again, it could offer the short term stability the country needs, while a new government is implemented. That could take some time. This would also have a direct effect on rules regarding brocolli. The Bhumjaithai party who legalised it would likely get a big power up as it is comprised of mostly ex military members and that would be very positive for the end user.
So all in all, while the border conflict is negative, with both Thai and Cambodian lives having already been lost. Even with a ceasefire announcement it will likely lead to more military control. This, in turn would work against any further tightening of rules on broccoli usage. If the military do indeed 'take over' entirely, the focus will be on stabilising the country and not on political posturing and squabbling over silly new rules on Broccoli.
So, book your flights! Thailand remains very safe and will continue to be as always. Don't feel intimidated or scared, we will keep you updated as to the best of our knowledge. Try not to read too much into mainsteeam western media which is designed to spread fear, uncertainty and doubt and instead listen to commentary from trusted sources on the ground here.
