Sodium: A mineral that dialysis patients should avoid.
🩺 Patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis require meticulous nutritional management, particularly concerning their intake of minerals such as sodium. Due to impaired renal function, these patients cannot effectively excrete sodium, leading to symptoms such as persistent dry mouth and increased thirst, which often results in excessive fluid intake. This fluid overload can cause edema and severe complications, including hypertension, pulmonary edema, and congestive heart failure. 🔴
📌 It is recommended that dialysis patients limit their daily sodium intake to no more than 2,000 milligrams.
Typically, a regular daily diet contains approximately 800 to 1,000 milligrams of sodium.
📋 Therefore, doctors recommend that dialysis patients avoid high-sodium foods as well as those containing hidden sodium sources, such as baked goods made with baking powder (e.g., bread and cookies), electrolyte drinks, freshly squeezed fruit juices, and processed fruit juices containing added salt.
✅ To ensure adequate and balanced nutrition that supports overall health, dialysis patients should consume a diverse diet encompassing all five food groups. Cooking oils used should be healthy saturated fats, such as rice bran oil and olive oil. Additionally, patients are encouraged to eat cooked vegetables for a portion size of half to one tablespoon daily.
