There’s a game for nervous system and regulation 🎮🀄️🧩

As a trauma therapist, I love helping my clients find ways of regulating that may not always include the traditional activities that we talk about in therapy.

Sometimes it’s as simple as playing a game. There are a ton of games out there that have different purposes for grounding, for relaxing, for connecting with others, for getting the jitters out, and more! 👉🏾

We are nervous system regulation posted everywhere, but we what does it actually mean? 🧠🤍✨

Our nervous system is our body’s alarm
It scans for danger without us having to consciously decide to

When we’re in hyper-vigilant states, we can experience higher levels of anxiety, panic, chronic worry, dissociation, challenges relaxing, numbness, and fight, flight, freeze responses.

Nervous system regulation helps our body return back to a state of balance. Sometimes we need help with this which is where grounding tools come in such as:

✨somatic movement
✨breathwork
✨walking
✨naming things in our environment
✨sour candy
✨humming
✨naming our environment
✨naming things in our physical environment
✨naming the date and our physical location

It’s your therapist bestie 👋🏾
Here’s why I focus on self-care as a client therapist. 🧠✨

Before beginning trauma work, especially processing trauma, I spend time with my clients working on their foundations.
Making sure we can cultivate small acts of self-care to practice regulation by showing up for ourselves in small ways.

This can help reframe the messages that we’ve been told whether it be directly or indirectly that our needs don’t matter or that we were not allowed to have needs in the first place, especially if we are trauma survivors.

Self-care teachers are nervous system that we can learn to depend on our ourselves and established our trust and that our needs no longer have to go unmet.

Self-care also helps us to reframe the shame that we might feel from our symptoms to see our symptoms as signals rather than as weaknesses.

By taking small steps towards self-care, we help our body learn how to be present and find safety in the present moment, which can help us find moments of safety within our body as well. 🫶🏾🫧

I have the most amazing clients, and I’m constantly learning from them!
Many of them have been creating bingo cards for their new year’s intentions instead of the usual resolutions. 🪩 ✨
This idea has worked wonders for their emotional being and here’s how: 👇🏾

✨ releases pressure for perfectionism
✨ gets rid of “all-or-nothing” goals
✨ gives us a low-pressure approach reducing shame
✨ reduces stress
✨ gives us a creative and explorative approach to goals
✨ roots us in our autonomy versus doing what we “should”

My clients only goal have been to aim for getting “bingo” one time during the year and given them the freedom to design goals that are special to them as individuals.

If you want a new approach to your goals, give it a try.
Swipe 👉🏾 for different options!

Self-care can be simple 🤍✨❄️
With so much pretty yet curated content on social media surrounding self-care, I as your therapist bestie invite you to disconnect from content for a moment and pick 3 simple things for your go-to self-care moments that don’t require a lot from you.

These are my faves ☺️:
Make a warm drink ☕️
Step outside in fresh air for 5 minutes ☀️
Put on a lip gloss or skincare noticing the smells and sensations 🧖🏾‍♀️
Make or listen to your favorite playlist 📱
Bake cookies 🍪
Watch your favorite movie 🎥 or show
Put on something cozy 🧦
Read a book you enjoy 📕
Do a puzzle 🧩
Go to bed early 🛌
Light a candle 🕯️
Journal 📝
Sing 🎤
Dance 💃🏾
Move your body in happy ways ☺️
