We are all unique, we all look different when doing Yoga, and that's not only okay but an important detail to understand when practicing Yoga 🙂🙏

As much as we are similar in many ways, we all have different anatomy, different joint and bone structure, and also importantly unique minds. This will result in everyone's Yoga practice looking and feeling different. If you look at these pictures, where there are experienced yogis and inexperienced yogis seen, every single one of the poses have a unique form to them. Even the resting poses are unique 😌 This is not just due to experience, there are plenty of physical differences that lead to this. One person might be what is called "hypermobile" and they will be flexible to the point where they potentially should adjust their practice to actually counter that mobility to prevent injury. Another person may have a long-term knee injury, or just have a hip structure that prevents a particular variation. And so on...

It's important that we both accept and understand our uniqueness and our differences, and how it relates to our practice. Yoga is a beautiful way to help you find balance, make the practice your own, find acceptance, and improve both physical and mental health 🧡 It shouldn't have to come at a cost of injuries and unsafe practices in order to fit a certain aesthetic.

Let's embrace our differences and create a practice that works for us 😊🙏

It's not uncommon to hear someone say "I'm not flexible enough to do yoga"

Sometimes people mistake being flexible to being "good" at Yoga, which is not actually true. Putting aside the fact that being "good" at Yoga is not really a very meaningful metric to think about, it's good to remember that Yoga is so much more than just being flexible. It is about the journey, which is personal to us individually. It's about connecting with your body and mind. It's working towards understanding your breath and how it impacts your life and your practice. Yoga is very much also about strength and creating stability, as well as finding balance both in body and mind 😌 it's being good to yourself.

For some, someone we might call "hypermobile", their natural flexibility actually poses an injury risk, so they might need to focus more on building strength and support for their hypermobility. So, it's good to keep in mind that every single body is different; our body structure, joints, shapes, muscles, injuries, age, our mind... there is no one correct shape or type. So if you don't think you are flexible, that's completely fine. You make your practice your own, with the help of our experienced teachers.

Seeing the sun rise while going through your morning yoga practice is special 🌄🧘‍♀️

We always say it's okay if you're not a morning person, and it's okay if you can't make it to our sunrise yoga sessions. There is nothing wrong with that, it's not for everyone to be waking up so early for yoga. It's your practice, your preference, you will not be pressured here at Hill Club.

If you are of the type who is able to enjoy getting up early, however, it's an absolutely amazing experience to witness the sunrise, the transition from night to morning light, the fresh morning air. The sunrise yoga classes are definitely something you won't forget in a while. We love our sunrises here at Hill Club, it's a big part of our identity. It's a unique class in Phuket, given how we are facing the sunrise and located up on a hill with a wonderful view, and a unique yoga experience you can't quite find anywhere else.

Have you tried our sunrise yoga classes yet?

Yoga is sometimes misunderstood as a practice where reaching certain shapes and poses exactly as "you are supposed to" is the primary goal. You may or may not reach a given shape in a yoga pose for a countless number of reasons; all our body types and bone structures are unique, our tissues and joints work differently, we may have injuries old or new, and the list goes on. Yoga is so much more than just reaching a certain shape.

It is a journey of self-discovery. It’s about strengthening the link between your mind and your body. Every breath, every moment in yoga practice is a step towards understanding ourselves better. It is a journey towards acceptance, towards wellness and wellbeing of you and those around you. It is about learning. Yoga welcomes all - every shape, every size, every person. Instead of worrying about reaching a certain shape perfectly, let’s celebrate the diversity of our journeys, because "Yoga is not about touching your toes. It is what you learn on the way down."

Have you experienced Yin Yoga yet? It is a calm and slow-paced, yet very effective form of yoga. It is characterised by gently stressing the connective tissues particularly in the area between the navel and the knees; we could call this a fascia conditioning class as well! Yin yoga practice consists mainly of floor poses that are held for a long time (typically 3-5 minutes) with relaxed muscles combined with deep breathing. This directs the stimulation of the physical yoga practice to the deeper tissues of the body.

It is a very accessible type of yoga, and very beginner friendly, so it's the perfect type of yoga class for team building and other group sessions, as well as individuals.

We have Yin Yoga classes every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday. If you haven't yet had the chance to try it, we warmly welcome you to join us on this peaceful practice whenever it suits you 😊🙏

Touching the Sun 🫳☀️

Have you done yoga at sunrise? If you have, we'd love for you to share your experience in the comments. It is such a beautiful experience and a perfect way to start the day, if you are an early bird or it suits you to wake up a bit early on an occasion 🌄. We do it twice a week, Tuesdays and Fridays, our sunrise yoga class starting at 5.45am. It is important to us to keep these yoga classes open to all levels, so whatever level you are, beginner or advanced, there will always be individualised variations for you to try. Yoga at Hilltop is for everybody and every body ☺️

Warrior 2 yoga pose, what are some key considerations?

- In Warrior 2, the standard recommendation is to bend the front knee only so far that you can still see your big toe from behind the knee, so that we don't stress the front of the knee too much. You might hear your teacher suggesting to "align your knee on top of the heel/ankle".

- The alignment of your feet in relation to one another is dependent on your individual hip/pelvic structure. For many people, aligning heel to heel works well - like teacher Nuya is demonstrating here. However, let yourself play with the placement of the feet so that you feel strong and grounded without pain in your hips or knees.

- If extending the arms out, look for that "double spiral" in yours arms: rotate your shoulders out dropping them away from your ears and then rotate your palms towards the floor (extra tip: this same rotation might work for your arms in Downward-Facing Dog too!)

If you want a more detailed instructional video on warrior 2, check out this asanas in detail video from our yoga teacher Heini: https://youtu.be/LPHNCrCRmFk?si=8AnqV2DWl1EVKG8e

Feel free to share your thoughts as well with our hilltop yoga community ☺️🙏

"To me, yoga is a tool of health - and
it's not just for physical health but includes also mental
health and emotional wellbeing. Happiness is all
around."

This quote is from Yine, seen in these pictures, one of
our amazing yoga teachers, who always brings her
energy and positivity to the class. She is always
focused on observing and looking out for her students
in an attempt to adjust the class to their needs.

We are proud to make sure the yoga classes and
retreats at Hilltop Wellness Resort are welcoming to all
people - people of all abilities, from all sorts of
backgrounds, and aknowledging our differences and
adjusting the practice with that in mind.

The King Pigeon pose (Eka Pada Rajakapotasana), shown here by one of our teachers Nuya. Here are a few ideas for this pose if you want to try it at
home:

🧡 It doesn't have to look exactly like this, we are all
different, so the pose will look different in every
individual's body

🧡 Feel free to adjust the front leg position and angle,
here is a link to a video about it from our Yoga Manager

🧡 Yoga is a journey into learning more about yourself
and connecting with what feels good in your body. If
you feel pain, take a step back and find an edge that
feels safe for you. Yoga being a journey means that our
practice is always evolving and there's no need to
rush it. Enjoy your journey into your King Pigeon pose!
