21st Anniversary of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami
Remembering Lives Lost, Honoring Humanity, Strengthening Preparedness

26 December 2004 : A 9.0-magnitude earthquake beneath the Indian Ocean, off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, triggered a massive tsunami that claimed countless lives and devastated coastal communities across 13 countries. The loss left not only physical destruction, but also a deep and lasting mark on the memory of humanity.
Amid chaos and uncertainty, Bangkok Hospital Phuket received 981 injured patients, both Thai and international, providing care around the clock without pause. More than 400 patients required inpatient treatment, and some critically injured patients were repatriated to their home countries through the collective efforts of doctors, nurses, and emergency medical transport teams within the Bangkok Hospital network.
What took place that day was not only the treatment of the injured, but a steadfast commitment to serve humanity—guided by compassion, knowledge, and the highest sense of responsibility.
The memories remain, and the lessons of that day are never forgotten. Bangkok Hospital Phuket, together with all Bangkok Hospital network in Phuket, continues to learn, to strengthen preparedness, and to share experience with society, in order to be ready for any crisis that may arise in the future.

2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami
A massive earthquake measuring 8-9 on the Richter scale struck Northern Sumatra, Indonesia on 26 December 2004. A few hours later, a sweeping tsunami devastated 6 Thai coastal provinces along the Andaman Sea: Phuket, Phang Nga, Ranong, Krabi, Trang, and Satun.
As a center of medical care and patient referral back then, Bangkok Hospital Phuket was flooded with the injured and relatives, with all staff working day and night.
