Growth
Growth comes from the pursuit of perspective and meaning. In life there are many types of growth but to simplify lets just define two types of growth growing “wide” and growing “deep”.
Growing “wide” to me is about gaining new perspectives; it is about being out of your comfort zone, opening up your mind, testing your limits. Travelling somewhere new, picking up a new hobby, or forging new relationships are some examples of this. This type of growth opens up our lives to meaningful experiences, relationships, and opportunities, originally unimaginable to us. This sounds amazing, but truly meaningful growth requires balance–it must be simplified and true to who you are.
This is where growing “deep” comes into play because going wide without ever achieving depth is rootless, although, you are growing the growth feels significantly less meaningful and purposeful. For all of you, who love adventure, the next big thing, the thing that challenges your mind, self awareness is incredibly important, finding the balance between optimal growth and when you are just trying to boil the ocean, is crucial to sustainable growth.
Growing “deep” starts from following your heart. To analyse all the patterns in your life, all the perspectives, experiences, not just with your brain but with your heart. The process of analysing these “patterns” should help you find meaning and the clarity for the next step–where to go deep. The person you want a deeper relationship with, the area of your career you want to dive into, the places that make you feel like you belong.
How you approach growth can shape your life. Growth is what allows us to put our best selves forward. It allows us to overcome things, to achieve, to forgive. Finding the balance between growing “deep” and growing “wide” keeps you curious and keeps you humble. Because the only limits to our growth are the ones we impose on ourselves.
