🌱 UNTL Business Plan Competition – From Field to Pitch! 🌱

Following a month of professional placements in TOMAK’s target municipalities, 6 UNTL students took the stage to pitch their business ideas in TOMAK's Business Plan Competition.

The hands-on experience—working with local farmers, applying Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), and tackling real market challenges—gave students practical insights they could build into their proposals.

The result? Business plans that are not only creative but grounded in real-world learning and responsive to community needs.

💡 A great example of how field experience can strengthen classroom learning—and inspire the next generation of agri-preneurs in Timor-Leste.

💪🌾💚 Strengthening Nutrition Services in Bobonaro!

📍 In Bobonaro, 41 health personnel just completed the last round of Nutrition-Senstive-Agriculture training—an initiative led by TOMAK together with the Ministry of Health and INSP-TL. The training is giving health workers new tools to integrate agriculture into their nutrition advice.

Maria Domingas, Nurse, Suku Lourba, Bobonaro:
“Over the past three days, we’ve learned so many new things about ASN, especially how agriculture can support better nutrition. As health workers, we’re used to trainings that focus mainly on health topics, so this was a completely new and refreshing perspective for us. For the first time, we really saw how agriculture connects with our work—and how it can help us improve the way we support our clients and patients.”

During the training, participants also developed practical plans to apply their new knowledge. One key tool is the food availability calendar, which will help health workers give more practical advice to patients experiencing malnutrition.

By applying what they’ve learned, health personnel are now better equipped to make a real difference in reducing malnutrition in Bobonaro.

📢 Investing in knowledge = investing in healthier futures!

Shallot Harvest in Atabae! 🧅🌱

We’re excited to share that a new group of farmers in Atabae has joined TOMAK’s network—and after just five months of collaboration, they are now celebrating their first shallot harvest with TOMAK support. It’s a strong start that highlights both the farmers’ dedication and TOMAK’s growing reach across Timor-Leste. Together the group has:

✅ 1.3 hectares under cultivation, and

✅ harvested an initial 160 kg (with much more to come)

This milestone is the result of farmers applying new skills gained through TOMAK’s Farmer Field School activities, with support and collaboration with MALFF extension workers in Bobonaro to ensure good agricultural practices throughout the season.

This outcome is achieved through collaboration with the coordinator of the Municipal Authority of Bobonaro, and the local authority.

Further, the results have already caught attention — major supermarkets in Dili have placed orders for upcoming harvests. Local leaders, partners, collectors, and community members came together to celebrate, underscoring the strong momentum behind these new farmer groups and TOMAK’s expanding impact.

👏 Congratulations to the farmers and extension team for making this possible. More harvests are just around the corner!

🌱 Growing Nutrition, Growing Inclusion ♿🌾

In our latest Integrated Nutrition-Sensitive Agriculture & Disability Training, farmers, caregivers, community leaders, and persons with disabilities came together to explore one powerful idea: agriculture works best when everyone can take part.

Through role-playing, hands-on demonstrations, and shared problem-solving, participants learned:

🔹 Practical ways to grow diverse, nutrient-rich crops in any setting

🔹 How to adapt farming tools and techniques so they’re accessible for people with different abilities
🔹 Strategies for empowering persons with disabilities to lead and participate in food production
🔹 Community-driven solutions to tackle malnutrition and food insecurity

💬 “True food security means no one is left behind — including people with disabilities.” 💬

By making agriculture more inclusive, we’re not just growing food — we’re growing opportunities, dignity, and stronger, healthier communities.

Healthy Chickens, Stronger Livelihoods 🐔

We recently finished our third Poultry Farmer Field School in Uatucarbau, Viqueque—this session focused on animal health, early signs of disease, and how to protect poultry from sickness.
With support from a local veterinary technician, farmers learned how to spot problems early—because healthy chickens mean fewer losses, more eggs, more meat, and better income and nutrition for families.

A big thanks to our local field staff, national agri team, and the amazing university students from UNTL - Faculty of Agriculture, Livestock department, who are currently doing their placements in the area! 👨‍🌾👩‍🔬

Investing in animal health means stronger families and better food security.

🏡💬 Decision-Making that Builds Respect

In many households, decision-making power is still concentrated in one person — often the man. But what happens when others are left out of important discussions about land, income, or children’s needs?

Through our HHDM sessions, TOMAK is promoting inclusive, respectful decision-making — where spouses and family members share ideas and concerns and come to decisions together. When everyone is involved, there is more trust, less tension, and fewer misunderstandings.

Our sessions help families unpack real-life situations that could lead to conflict, like financial disagreements or cultural obligations. Then, they explore what it would look like to involve everyone in the decision — not just as a formality, but as a foundation for stronger relationships.

“As a couple, we make all household decisions together. We’re committed to open communication and involving our children, so that everyone is heard and our family is represented in a balanced, respectful way”, stated Duarte da Costa, after participating in Household Decision Making (HHDM) session in Laga, Baucau.

When families share decision-making power, they build a sense of unity and shared purpose. Because strong households don’t just make decisions — they make them together. ❤️

🌱 Meet Mana Guilermina da Silva from Builo, Ossu!

Last month, Mana Guilermina joined a TOMAK-supported food processing training in Hera. When she returned to Builo, she didn’t keep the knowledge to herself—she shared what she’d learned about making tempeh from soybeans with others in her community. 🙌

Since then, she’s started producing and selling tempeh—something that’s never been available in her area before. As the only person in Builo making this nutritious, plant-based protein, Mana Guilermina is giving families a healthy new option to include in their diets. 🌱

She’s also putting her earnings to good use, saving through her Savings and Loans Group and planning to grow her business even further. 💪

🗣 “I’m very happy to have joined the TOMAK training. My family is happy too, because now I can make tempeh and it helps us,” she shared with a smile.

Furthermore, as person with disability, and with the assistance from a colleague at RHTO, she actively participated in building her own hydroponic system.

👉 This is a powerful example of how one woman’s initiative can enhance local nutrition and generate new opportunities for her entire community.
