Overview of the Stages of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Based on Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR)
Stage 1: GFR 90 or higher – Normal function
Stage 2: GFR 60–89 – Mild loss of kidney function
Stage 3A: GFR 45–59 – Mild to moderate loss
Stage 3B: GFR 30–44 – Moderate to severe loss
Stage 4: GFR 15–29 – Severe loss
Stage 5: GFR below 15 – Kidney failure
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) progresses through five recognized stages based on the glomerular filtration rate (GFR), which indicates how efficiently the kidneys filter waste from the bloodstream.
According to the National Kidney Foundation and global nephrology guidelines, a GFR of 90 or higher represents Stage 1, though underlying kidney damage may still be present.
Stage 2 reflects a mild decline in function, with a GFR of 60–89.
Stage 3 is divided into two sub-stages:
• Stage 3A: GFR 45–59
• Stage 3B: GFR 30–44
These levels show moderate reductions in kidney function.
Stage 4 (GFR 15–29) represents severe loss and often requires planning for renal replacement therapy.
Stage 5 (GFR
