🐱DID YOU KNOW: Findings from 2 large-scale research studies suggest that the area that is modern day Tunisia may be the origin of the domestic cat, which is descended from the African wildcat. https://phys.org/news/2025-04-complex-story-domestic-cats-tunisia.html 🐱

''Cats likely moved into Europe in multiple waves post-domestication from North Africa, propelled by human cultural practices, trade networks, and religious reverence.''

Researchers looking into the origin of domestic cats have long considered that cats likely accompanied early farmers during the Neolithic, spreading through Europe alongside the adoption of agriculture.

I was walking a sensitive little canine buddy on the beach, when a larger dog came up and similar words were said to me.

My canine buddy is comfortable only with very well-behaved calm dogs his size or smaller.

These interactions can be used to communicate that it's not about meeting one dog's perceived needs: it's about respecting both dogs' needs and that of the other human.

Sometimes people will listen and take that on board, other times they will not. The most important thing is that you have expressed and upheld boundaries for your dog and looked after their wellbeing and safety.

Not every dog is another dog's readily available playmate. It's human responsibility to inform ourselves on how to meet our dogs' social and canine enrichment needs without harming anyone in the process. πŸ™

There are several foods that are toxic to dogs, and it’s important to avoid giving them these items. Here are some of the most common ones:

Chocolate – Contains theobromine, which is toxic to dogs and can cause vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, and even death.

Grapes and Raisins – Can cause kidney failure in dogs, though the exact toxin is still unknown.

Onions and Garlic – These can damage a dog’s red blood cells and cause anemia.

Xylitol (artificial sweetener) – Found in sugar-free gum, candies, and baked goods, it can lead to low blood sugar and liver failure.

Alcohol – Even small amounts can cause vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, and central nervous system depression.

Avocado – Contains persin, which can cause vomiting and diarrhea in dogs.

Macadamia Nuts – These can cause weakness, tremors, and hyperthermia.

Caffeine – Found in coffee, tea, and energy drinks, caffeine can cause restlessness, rapid breathing, heart palpitations, and even death.

Raw dough or yeast – The dough can expand in the stomach and release alcohol, causing alcohol poisoning.

Cooked bones – They can splinter and cause choking or internal injuries.
Always be cautious about what your dog eats and keep these toxic foods well out of reach!

Cat acne is a disease in which the hair follicles, usually ones on a cat’s chin, produce too much keratin and become plugged. This results in red bumps, blackheads, and infected pimple-like lesions.
Initially, treatment may involve the use of oral or injectable antibiotics and topical shampoo or wipes.
Maintenance cleaning with chlorhexidine has been successful for many cats because it extends the amount of time between episodes and treatment.
Cleaning water and food dishes with increased frequency and a switch to stainless steel, glass, or ceramic dishes may also help for some cats.

Are your pet's claws tapping the floors? Time for a trim. Regular nail trims:
- Prevent adverse effects on joints, posture and gait
- Get your pet used to his/her legs and paws being handled more often
- Help you check for any hidden nasties on their leg, feet, toes and in between paw pads

It is important to try and work with your pet to have it accept careful handling in sensitive areas. With careful regular handling, you build trust that will be invaluable in the event of injury, ill health or old age.

Long claws on your pet can cause a variety of issues. When claws become too long, they can lead to discomfort, as the claws put additional pressure on the paws and cause the animal to shift its weight to avoid the pain. This altered weight distribution can change the pet's normal gait or walking pattern. For example, a dog with long claws may begin to walk on the side of their paws or avoid putting weight on certain toes, leading to potential joint strain or other issues over time. In more severe cases, long claws can cause injury by getting caught on surfaces, which may lead to painful tears or even infections. Regular nail trimming is essential to avoid these problems and maintain your pet’s comfort and mobility.

Food and water bowl cleaning isn't the easiest responsibility to start, mentally! πŸ˜…

I do it by telling myself that providing clean, hygienic bowls addresses my animals' basic need for safe positive eating/drinking experiences and proper care that they cannot address themselves.

Turn on a feel-good party song, pull on some dishwashing gloves and make it easier by thinking of who bowl washing is helping: your pet's health and wellbeing...and your future vet bills. πŸ˜„

The UK is the only country that offers proper specialised accredited training and qualifications in cat grooming. i.e. education that is regulated by a government entity.

It is also one of the few countries that offer proper government-accredited dog grooming qualifications.

It's for this reason that I completed a UK Diploma in Cat Grooming and Salon Management (in Liverpool and Cheshire!).

And am completing a UK Certificate in Dog Grooming and Styling (all practical training completed and assessments passed, in Devon πŸ₯³).

I am trained in feline and canine emergency first aid and refresh my knowledge each time I care for a senior or special needs client.
