Rhinoplasty, popularly known as rhinoplasty, is a surgical procedure to reshape the nose. It is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures and is typically done for both aesthetic and functional purposes.
Aesthetic rhinoplasty aims to improve the appearance of the nose by changing its size, shape, proportions or symmetry. This may include reducing the size of the nose, reshaping its tip, improving the bridge, or changing the angle between the nose and the upper lip. The surgeon may use a variety of techniques, such as removal or reorganization of cartilage and bone, to achieve the desired results.
Functional rhinoplasty focuses on improving nasal function. It is done to correct structural abnormalities that can block the airways and cause breathing difficulties. This may include correcting a deviated septum, reducing the size of the nasal co**ha, or addressing other nasal abnormalities that may affect breathing.
Rhinoplasty is typically performed under general anesthesia, but local anesthesia with sedation may be used in some cases. The surgery can be performed using an open or closed approach. In open rhinoplasty, a small incision is made on the columella (narrow tissue strip between the nostrils), allowing better visibility and entry of the nasal structures. In closed rhinoplasty, the incisions are made inside the nostrils and there is no visible scar from the outside.
After the operation, the patient will feel some swelling, bruising and discomfort around the nose and eyes. A tampon or pad can be placed to support the newly formed nose and facilitate healing. Most swelling and bruising will go away within a few weeks, but it may take several months for the final results of rhinoplasty to appear fully.
