30 years ago, the UK's last Dolphinarium closed its doors to the public. However, it's not actually illegal to keep dolphins in the UK, but the space and husbandry requirements needed to maintain them are difficult to meet. No company has attempted to keep dolphins since. While some see this as a win for animal welfare, others point out that the UK is no longer able to provide long-term rehabilitation to live-stranded cetaceans, of which it gets a handful each year. A recent article for the Natural History Museum revisits the well-trodden arguments for and against cetaceans in captivity but does so in an objective and balanced way, and includes an interview with our founder Dr Isabella Clegg.
