Endometriosis: Who Needs Surgery?
Endometriosis is a chronic condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus. It can cause severe menstrual pain, pelvic pain, infertility, and reduced quality of life.
However, not every patient with endometriosis requires surgery. Treatment decisions depend on the patient’s symptoms, fertility goals, and the extent of the disease.
🔹 Surgery may be recommended when:
• Severe pelvic pain that does not respond to medical treatment
• Large endometriomas (ovarian cysts related to endometriosis)
• Deep infiltrating endometriosis affecting organs such as the bowel, bladder, or ureters
• Infertility related to advanced endometriosis
• Suspicion of complications affecting pelvic organs
The goal of surgery is to remove endometriotic lesions, restore normal anatomy, relieve pain, and preserve fertility whenever possible.
Today, most endometriosis surgeries are performed using advanced laparoscopic techniques, which allow precise removal of lesions with faster recovery and minimal scarring.
If you experience severe menstrual pain, chronic pelvic pain, or difficulty conceiving, a proper evaluation by an experienced gynecologic surgeon is essential.
Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can significantly improve quality of life.
