Children’s IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) memories deserve serious reflection. Even at this early IVF conception stage, we know that IVF babies are having their own experiences as they navigate through this elaborate process. Their conception-related memories cannot be explained by childish fantasy. These accounts convey a similar message: “I was there. This affected me. I remember it.”
As researchers in pre and perinatal psychology and authors of 3 books on prebirth memories and prebirth communications, we have learned that our life does not begin after birth, as the cultural myths have led us to believe.
We have interviewed children and adults who spontaneously recall their primal journeys. They all can tell us about the way they entered this world: a spiritual existence before conception, the experience of conception when they came into their body, a remembrance of a conscious and sentient womb life, their birth experience, and even past lives!
In our book, Babies Are Cosmic, Signs of Their Secret Intelligence (2019), we share prebirth memories from children revealing their conscious journey from preconception to birth.
Among the prebirth memories we report are IVF children who recall IVF procedures such as Collection of Eggs & S***m; Conception; and Reduction of Siblings.
Here are 3 examples of children’s IVF memories:
1) The story of Jennie’s (pseudonym) conception in a laboratory petri dish was first reported by Dr. David Chamberlain in his book Windows to the Womb: Revealing the Conscious Baby from Conception to Birth (2013).
Dr Chamberlain is a groundbreaking researcher in prenatal and perinatal psychology and cofounder of APPPAH (Association of Pre and Perinatal Psychology and Health. He identified 12 sensing abilities of prenates and newborns based on 35 years of scientific research in prenatal and perinatal psychology. Dr. Chamberlain equated the womb to a “classroom” where unborn babies learn, have real memories, feel pain, and communicate. He challenged the traditional theories of early child development by gathering experimental and clinical data, and personal reports.
Dr Chamberlain reports that as a baby, “Jennie” awoke throughout the night screaming every 2 hours. When Jennie was 3 and old enough to put into words what her night terrors were all about, she told her mother about scary dreams in which people in white coats would loom over her holding “scissors and knives”—the simple words of a child describing IVF tools.
Dr. Chamberlain commented on Jennie’s memories: “In this case, night terrors actually memorialized an unidentified trauma being dramatically acted out.”
2) Alice’s 5-year-old Jon awoke in the night shivering and shaking with his teeth chattering and claiming, “I am freezing!”
Alice told us: This has been happening more and more with Jon in the last three months. When I touch him, he has normal body temperature.
Alice reports: I asked Jon what his dream was about, He said, “There are just these little circles.”
My instincts tell me this is related to being frozen as an embryo for 3 months. I can’t make sense of it otherwise.
Jon had his first night terror at 2. He has had over 20 in the past 3 years. They began to happen frequently in the last 6 months. He had 5 in the last 30 days.
He is afraid to go to bed. Last night he said, “I don’t want to close my eyes. My brain won’t let me.”
I asked, “What are you thinking about?”
“I can’t describe it.”
I asked him to draw it. Jon drew a jagged rock or mountain. He said, “It is sharp and powerful like a lightning bolt.”
3) Irene describes some troubling experiences: Many years ago, when I was a Waldorf Early Childhood teacher, I was in a caregiving situation with 2 IVF siblings as infants and toddlers. The brothers were 3 years apart in age.
I wasn't seeing them for healing in particular, but I got to know them and realized how the IVF affected their development. The two brothers often held each other and complained they were freezing. They said they had to hold each other in order to "warm up inside." These two brothers were frozen for 7 years before manual fertilization.
So, what does this mean for children who come in through IVF? Today the long-term implications of IVF on children are poorly recognized. The psychological and physical impacts of IVF technology on babies need time to be fully revealed. It is not yet possible to discern the effects of IVF conception, especially if no one is looking.
What we do know from Prenatal & Perinatal Psychology is that the moment of conception is a powerful one, whether it occurs within the mother’s body or in a petri-dish. Prenatal psychologists are learning more about how prenatal experiences and our womb environment influence our perceptions of life, sense of our family, whether the world is safe or not, etc. These experiences can affect who we become and how we express or don’t express ourselves. The ones who know about these problems are discovering ways to mitigate and heal these imprints from IVF interventions during conception.
Prenatal psychologists recognize that many IVF babies are very wanted babies. There is a lot of advantage in that for the babies compared to babies whose mothers do not want to be pregnant.
A wealth of studies and clinical data support the prenate’s sensitivity to the mother’s emotions, such as love or ambivalence and ambiguity. As psychoanalyst Isidor Isaak Sadger wrote, “The embryo already feels whether its mother loves it or not, whether she gives it much love, little love, or none at all.”
Marcy Axness PhD., who was adopted, shares insights into the effects of IVF technology on incoming children. In her book, Parenting for Peace, she writes:
“Researchers have long wondered whether there might be subtle changes in an embryo that is grown for several days in a petri dish, as IVF embryos are, and if so, whether there would be any consequences. Tentative answers are starting to emerge: some studies indicate that there may be some abnormal patterns of gene expression associated with IVF and a possible increase in rare but serious genetic disorders linked to those unusual gene expression patterns.
“My intention is not to put down or create undue fear about IVF, but rather to point out the techno-scientific hubris that permeates our era: because we had the sophisticated means to join s***m and egg outside the body’s natural processes we went ahead and did it, without a full understanding of the intricate developmental processes we were supplanting with pipettes and petri dishes.
“Richard Rawlins, director of the IVF and assisted reproduction laboratories at the Rush Centers for Advanced Reproductive Care, says he never gets questions about the possible consequences of growing embryos in the laboratory. ‘I have never had a patient ask me anything about it’, he said, adding, ‘For that matter, not many doctors have ever asked, either.’ He has ‘gradually become slightly less optimistic about the things that are known about the health of the children’ born after IVF and related procedures.
“Neonatologist Jean-Pierre Relier cites research emphasizing the importance of the fallopian tube in conception and implantation, describing its developmental role on five different postovulatory days, including the secretion of specific long-chain proteins, the preservation of s***m motility, and activation of genomic expression. ‘This action is essential for the first steps of growth but almost absent during in vitro fertilization, reducing the efficiency of this technique with possible long-term consequences after birth.”
“Along with those five days in the fallopian tube that are eclipsed with the use of assisted reproductive technologies, might there be other unrecognized forces at work at conception, something that might beckon to those of us seeking to bring new beings to life who are organized for peace and vibrant growth from the very beginning?”
In reflecting on the process of IVF, it is certainly eye opening to think of the huge awarenesses overlapping and commingling in the fertility labs and coming from those tiny petri dishes. Also, how might workers’ attitudes affect these new conscious beings upon conception and growth? These stories give a powerful visual of how blind we are, by manipulating the material with no understanding of the spirits or consequences involved.
More research into the cause of infertility and addressing the issue at the source is needed. Instead of expanding IVF, some advocate focusing on restorative reproductive medicine and using what we know about Birth Psychology to help woman enhance fertility and bond prenatally with their baby.
