Hammer Finger (Mallet Finger) – Medical Explanation
Hammer finger, also known as Mallet Finger, is a condition that occurs when the tendon responsible for straightening the tip of the finger is damaged. This injury usually happens when a strong force bends the fingertip downward suddenly, such as during sports activities or trauma (for example, a ball hitting the finger).
When this tendon is injured or torn, the patient is unable to actively straighten the end joint of the finger, causing the fingertip to remain bent downward.
Common symptoms include:
Drooping of the fingertip
Swelling and pain at the end of the finger
Difficulty extending the last joint of the finger
Causes:
Direct impact to the fingertip
Sports injuries (basketball, baseball, volleyball, etc.)
Sudden forceful bending of the finger
Treatment:
Most cases can be treated without surgery using a splint that keeps the fingertip straight for several weeks. In more severe cases where there is a fracture or complete tendon rupture, surgical intervention may be required.
Early diagnosis and proper treatment are important to prevent permanent deformity of the finger.
