Goitre is the swelling of the thyroid gland. This is caused by too much or too little activity in this gland. The thyroid gland is located at the front of the neck and secretes hormones regulating metabolism, affecting things like body temperature and energy levels. Problems arise if the thyroid is overactive or underactive.
The diagnosis of goiter starts with the patient's symptoms and medical history. During the physical examination, the doctor checks for swelling or nodules. Blood tests are then conducted to measure thyroid hormone levels. If necessary, imaging methods such as ultrasound and scintigraphy, and sometimes a fine needle aspiration biopsy, can be used to determine whether a nodule is benign or malignant.
The treatment for goitre varies depending on the type and severity of the thyroid disease. Hypothyroidism is typically managed through hormone replacement therapy. For hyperthyroidism, treatment options include medication, radioactive iodine therapy and surgery.
