🌟How long does edema after amputation last and can it be permanent?

🚨Post-amputation edema can usually last from a few weeks to several months. The duration of the edema varies depending on the level of amputation, the patient’s general state of health and the treatment administered. In most cases, with appropriate treatment, the edema will reduce and disappear. But in some cases, especially if there are complications such as circulatory problems, infection or lymphedema, the edema can become chronic and persistent.

🌟Prosthesis Use And Edema Relationship
An amputee with an edematous residual limb may experience pain, compression, friction, imbalance, and skin irritation while using a prosthesis. Edema disrupts the prosthetic fit, increasing the risk of movement restriction and pressure sores. The pressure inside the prosthesis can further impair circulation, worsening the edema.

To manage edema:
• Use compression bandages or liners,
• Ensure proper prosthetic adjustments,
• Engage in regular exercise and movement,
• Monitor skin and circulation health.

2. Drink plenty of water,
3. Consume potassium-rich foods,
4.Balance protein intake,
5.Regular follow-up,
6. Making cross windings,
7. The bandage should be removed when pain is observed,
8. Bandaging should be applied,
9. Regulate the pressure of the bandage,
10. Taking care that the bandage is not wrinkled or folded,
11. Getting support from liners in edema control,
12. The liner must not contain air.
