If you only knew the blessings that salvation brings you would never stay away. If you only saw the table set with lovely gifts you would come to the feast today. For the door is opened wide and the saviour bids you come. There is nothing you would have to pay. So be wise and step inside and do not be like some who have thrown their only chance away. Words to my favourite gospel hymn. The main things to me in this song are that we often don’t know the joys that we have within our reach, and, that wonderful opportunities are at our disposal…if only for a specific time frame. It’s like playing the lotto and knowing that you are guaranteed to win, and if you don’t have a ticket then you don’t have a chance. I believe that we are spiritual beings, and I follow a religion. However, there are many of us who do not conform to those beliefs. To these people, salvation is not a realistic destination. But what is salvation though? Theologically, salvation is deliverance from sin and its consequences. Isn’t that an amazing concept if you are religious? Born in sin yet still having the opportunity to be restored and preserved in joy and peace for an eternity. To the spiritual, the general definition of salvation is still dynamic. It means preservation or deliverance from harm, ruin, or loss. HARM, RUIN, OR LOSS! If you had a chance to save yourself from harm, ruin, or loss wouldn’t you take that opportunity? I mean, if there was such clarity in options to a fantastic life, then wouldn’t you quickly choose the side of fine dining, at a never-ending banquet, with ever-present joy and an abundance of love? This sounds airy fairy in a world that many of us have termed messed up, but all I mean is that the opportunity to be made whole is real. Life presents us with the ability to start afresh every day. To say here I am, ready to be the best version of myself, to take time to appreciate who I am and what aspects of my life need growth…and to make wellness a way of life. The door is opened wide. Be wise, and do not be like some who have thrown their only chance away.

My father recently celebrated his 97th birthday. Relatively healthy as he is independently ambulant, cognitively sound and eats like a…well a horse might be pushing it but he eats heartily. Though he has slowed down significantly during these COVID times, he has little need for assistance to do activities of daily living. I pondered on the remedy for his longevity and couldn’t think of any time I saw my father exercise. Now, I am an old man’s child as they say. He had me when he was 50. However, from all indication, his exercise routine was never great. He played a few cricket matches in his 20’s, but never anything of great worth. What I do remember though is that my dad worked hard. He worked harder than any other man I have ever seen work. Neat, disciplined, organized, driven, selfless and always willing to do anything extra just for the fun of it. He would get off work and rest for a while and then do what ever chores needed to be done around the house. When there was a project to be done (minor renovations, trimming of trees, picking of fruit, cleaning of yard, windows to be cleaned and, my favourite, reorganizing of rocks), he approached it with a vigour that stupefied my intelligence. Then he would rest, eat, pray and go to his wife for some pampering. Balanced. Giving his all to every aspect of his life. Now that he is in the proverbial twilight years, he still gets that balance (although his literal balance has started to fail – Fall prevention is a next talk we shall have soon). What is that balance that he gets? He is not just healthy but he is also well. He consciously tries to engage every aspect of his being to achieve a holistic product that is pleasing to his creator, who or what influences his values. The saying, “You are what you eat” is not entirely accurate, for we are also what we do, how we think, what we fill our minds with, how we share our emotions, how we interact with the environment and where we apply our resources. The dimensions of wellness are all inside there and we should all strive to improve them equally.

This is not a Lenten related post. It's simply a late delivery of a necessary element of wellness. Spirituality. Spiritualism. Spiritual wellness is a personal matter involving values and beliefs that provide purpose in our lives...the search for meaning and purpose in human existence. Are you engaged in the process of spiritual wellness? Evaluate your own spiritual wellness with this quiz:

> Do I make time for relaxation in my day?

> Do I make time for meditation or prayer?

> Do my values guide my decisions and actions?

> Am I accepting of the views of others?

If you answered no to any of the questions then there may be a need for improvement in that specific area.

I need you to be well. Let's live well. Eat right. Move more. Stress less.

Five ways to wellbeing
The following steps have been researched and developed by the New Economics Foundation.

1) Connect

There is strong evidence that indicates that feeling close to, and valued by, other people is a fundamental human need and one that contributes to functioning well in the world.

It’s clear that social relationships are critical for promoting wellbeing and for acting as a buffer against mental ill health for people of all ages.

With this in mind, try to do something different today and make a connection.

Talk to someone instead of sending an email
Speak to someone new
Ask how someone’s weekend was and really listen when they tell you
Put five minutes aside to find out how someone really is
Give a colleague a lift to work or share the journey home with them.

2) Be active

Regular physical activity is associated with lower rates of depression and anxiety across all age groups.

Exercise is essential for slowing age-related cognitive decline and for promoting well-being.

But it doesn’t need to be particularly intense for you to feel good - slower-paced activities, such as walking, can have the benefit of encouraging social interactions as well providing some level of exercise.

Today, why not get physical? Here are a few ideas:

Take the stairs not the lift
Go for a walk at lunchtime
Walk into work - perhaps with a colleague – so you can ‘connect’ as well
Get off the bus one stop earlier than usual and walk the final part of your journey to work
Organise a work sporting activity
Have a kick-about in a local park
Do some ‘easy exercise’, like stretching, before you leave for work in the morning
Walk to someone’s desk instead of calling or emailing.

3) Take notice

Reminding yourself to ‘take notice’ can strengthen and broaden awareness.

Studies have shown that being aware of what is taking place in the present directly enhances your well-being and savouring ‘the moment’ can help to reaffirm your life priorities.

Heightened awareness also enhances your self-understanding and allows you to make positive choices based on your own values and motivations.

Take some time to enjoy the moment and the environment around you. Here are a few ideas:

Get a plant for your workspace
Have a ‘clear the clutter’ day
Take notice of how your colleagues are feeling or acting
Take a different route on your journey to or from work
Visit a new place for lunch.

4) Learn

Continued learning through life enhances self-esteem and encourages social interaction and a more active life.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that the opportunity to engage in work or educational activities particularly helps to lift older people out of depression.

The practice of setting goals, which is related to adult learning in particular, has been strongly associated with higher levels of wellbeing.

Why not learn something new today? Here are a few more ideas:

Find out something about your colleagues
Sign up for a class
Read the news or a book
Set up a book club
Do a crossword or Sudoku
Research something you’ve always wondered about
Learn a new word.

5) Give

Participation in social and community life has attracted a lot of attention in the field of wellbeing research.

Individuals who report a greater interest in helping others are more likely to rate themselves as happy.

Research into actions for promoting happiness has shown that committing an act of kindness once a week over a six-week period is associated with an increase in wellbeing.

The greatest of follies is to sacrifice health for any other kind of happiness.
— Arthur Schopenhauer

Follies! Lack of good sense. Not me! I doh wa lack sense. I have a wonderful family. A lovely wife. Lemme try my best to get healthy to enjoy a good life. Making time for another workout this evening...as long as there is God-given air in my lungs.

There is no one giant step that does it. It’s a lot of little steps.” -Unknown.
Finding the time to exercise has become common place. Our daily lives are now packed with activities that keep us from being able to enjoy more life in the future. Today I say enough is enough. The philosophers believe that too little exercise has no effect on fitness but it can improve health. Today I start with little steps to health and wellness. 15 minutes is all I need. Baby steps to renewed youth. I'll post the routines. You can do it on your own. Just get started.

😮 August is around the corner!!!
Cant't make it to Nicholas Wellness Centre?? 😢😭. Well here's how you can join in on my "Abs By August" Challenge from the comfort of your home. 😀
Step 1: Using a measuring tape, record your waist size in inches. Your waist is located at or just above your belly button. Exhale, check and record the measurement on the tape.
Step 2: Using the same tape, now measure your hip size. standing with your feet together, place the tape around the widest point on your bottom half. Write down this measurement in inches also.
Step 3: Divide your waist by your hip (waist÷hip). This gives your waist to hip ratio 🤔(more about the importance of this measurement in future posts).
Step 4: Using this calculated figure and your age, look for your ratio range on the waist to hip ratio chart provided.
Step 5: Comment "Im in" under this post to let us know you have joined us on this exciting challenge.🙋🏾🙌🏾
Step 6: Get motivated 😤💪🏾 and stay tuned for more information.
