My father recently celebrated his 97th birthday. Relatively healthy as he is independently ambulant, cognitively sound and eats like a…well a horse might be pushing it but he eats heartily. Though he has slowed down significantly during these COVID times, he has little need for assistance to do activities of daily living. I pondered on the remedy for his longevity and couldn’t think of any time I saw my father exercise. Now, I am an old man’s child as they say. He had me when he was 50. However, from all indication, his exercise routine was never great. He played a few cricket matches in his 20’s, but never anything of great worth. What I do remember though is that my dad worked hard. He worked harder than any other man I have ever seen work. Neat, disciplined, organized, driven, selfless and always willing to do anything extra just for the fun of it. He would get off work and rest for a while and then do what ever chores needed to be done around the house. When there was a project to be done (minor renovations, trimming of trees, picking of fruit, cleaning of yard, windows to be cleaned and, my favourite, reorganizing of rocks), he approached it with a vigour that stupefied my intelligence. Then he would rest, eat, pray and go to his wife for some pampering. Balanced. Giving his all to every aspect of his life. Now that he is in the proverbial twilight years, he still gets that balance (although his literal balance has started to fail – Fall prevention is a next talk we shall have soon). What is that balance that he gets? He is not just healthy but he is also well. He consciously tries to engage every aspect of his being to achieve a holistic product that is pleasing to his creator, who or what influences his values. The saying, “You are what you eat” is not entirely accurate, for we are also what we do, how we think, what we fill our minds with, how we share our emotions, how we interact with the environment and where we apply our resources. The dimensions of wellness are all inside there and we should all strive to improve them equally.
