Fibroid Awareness Trinidad & Tobago

Fibroid Awareness Trinidad & Tobago A repository of information on fibroids and other issues of the uterus

Empowerment of women and girls through awareness, advocacy and support initiatives.

Founded by Korice AQ Nancis, this project was first conceptualised in 2008. The genesis of Fibroid Awareness Trinidad & Tobago (formerly Fibroid Awareness Campaign Tobago-FACT), is inextricably linked to its Founder's diagnosis with Uterine Fibroids at the age of 20 in 2006. She eventually had a successful myomectomy (open surgery to remove fibroids) done on January 23rd, 2014

After diagnosis, her natural curiousity about health issues increased and she quickly became obsessed with learning as much as she could about her specific condition. Her early diagnosis also served to motivate her to initially conceptualise and implement Fibroid Awareness Campaign Tobago for her final year project as a communications student at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus. With the progression of her journey- from diagnosis to surgery- it became more apparent that many women in Tobago were under-informed and suffered in silence. As such, she committed to employing new media to provide facts and create awareness in Tobagonian women and women in general about Fibroids. To date, she also highlights other issues of the uterus, focuses on broader reproductive health and includes community outreach as integral parts of this initiative. PLEASE NOTE:

We are feeling hopeful at Fibroid TT following today's announcement of a Women’s Health Fund in the 2026 National Budget Statement.

Period Poverty is multifaceted and affects vulnerable women and girls greatly, policy measures, designed with our girls and women in mind, are therefore welcomed and must be commended. We await further details on accessing the fund.

'Period Poverty continues to undermine the health and educational opportunities of many women and girls in Trinidad and Tobago.
Women and girls impacted by Period Poverty struggle to afford menstrual hygiene products.
To this end, I propose the following strategic interventions to address this socio-economic issue: ' - Tancoo

A very interesting and informative study. 📝

Of course, we immediately think of cases of women with enlarged hearts after prolonged symptomatic anemia as a result of fibroids as well!

🫀 Women with fibroids are more likely to develop atrial fibrillation (AF), a heart rhythm disorder.

In a study of over 2.5 million women, those with fibroids had double the risk of AF, especially if they hadn’t had surgery.

Why the link? Likely because AF and some types of uterine fibroids share deeper drivers like inflammation and metabolic dysfunction. That means addressing those underlying issues could benefit both uterus and heart health. ❤️

💡 This may not apply to all fibroids because there are different types, depending on hormone receptor status and the degree and nature of fibrotic changes.

And chime in with your fibroid knowledge!

Our Story

I eventually had a successful myomectomy (open surgery to remove fibroids) done on January 23rd, 2014 After initial diagnosis, my natural curiousity about health issues increased and I quickly became obsessed with learning as much as I could about my specific condition. As such, I became committed to employing new media to provide facts and create awareness in Tobagonian women and women, in general, about Fibroids. The vision also includes an expansion of scope to also shed light on other issues of the uterus (such as Poly-cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and Endometriosis) and wider reproductive health. Community outreach is envisioned to be an integral part of this initiative.
