💚 Today we celebrate World Cerebral Palsy Day 💚

It’s a day to raise awareness and celebrate the resilience of people living with cerebral palsy. People living with cerebral palsy live happy, meaningful lives all over the world.

In music therapy, we use rhythm to support consistent, more coordinated movements like walking, reaching, or even using adaptive instruments. Singing can also strengthen breath control and communication, while playing instruments gives opportunities to practice fine motor skills in a way that feels motivating and fun.

At Harmonies & Healing, we firmly believe music has the power to unite and uplift while creating a safe space for every voice and every body.

Sharing an old photo I found from 2013. It was my first day as a student teaching artist at Memisa Centre in Trinidad, during my undergraduate studies at the University of Trinidad & Tobago. I didn’t know it at the time, but this was the place where everything started to shift for me.

It was here I first felt the pull toward working with the disability community. A quiet nudge that later became my life’s work. Grateful for the seeds planted in that room, and for the spark that’s still burning today.

Today, Harmonies & Healing recognises World Cri du Chat Awareness Day!

Cri du Chat syndrome, also called cat’s cry syndrome or 5p- (pronounced “five p minus”) syndrome, is a rare genetic disorder. US statistics show that Cri du Chat syndrome affects 50 to 60 births each year. Babies born with this disorder have a unique cry similar to the high-pitched sound that cats make, hence the name ‘cat’s cry syndrome’.

Cri du Chat occurs when there is a partial deletion of chromosome 5. This deletion happens in the earliest stages of fetal development, and the nature of the deletion determines the symptoms a baby will face as they grow older.

Babies with Cri du Chat syndrome may have distinct facial features (such as an unusually small head, wide-set eyes, or monolid eyes). They may experience developmental delays, weak muscle tone, feeding issues, and intellectual disabilities. Cri du Chat syndrome is diagnosed by a doctor who will perform a thorough medical exam and may recommend various tests.

Music therapy can be beneficial for children and adults with Cri du Chat syndrome by supporting communication, motor, cognitive, and emotional development. Through singing, rhythm, and instrument play, individuals can work on vocalization, coordination, and attention. Additionally, music therapy can empower caregivers by involving them in interactive, bonding experiences that can be continued at home.

Today, Harmonies & Healing recognises American Sign Language Day!

American Sign Language (ASL) is used by almost half a million people in the United States. While the deaf community here in Trinidad & Tobago has created their own language; Trinidad and Tobago Sign Language (TTSL), ASL is still widely used to communicate.

In music therapy, ASL is not only a bridge to communication for the deaf and hard of hearing, but also a powerful tool used with non-verbal clients to support expression, connection, and engagement. Music therapists are trained to integrate multiple modes of communication, including sign language, to ensure that every individual has a voice in the therapeutic space.

How many ASL signs do you know?
