It's the holidays, and the carnival season is quickly approaching. We are all excited to spend time with our loved ones and enjoy the carnival festivities. Persons on dialysis can travel to Trinidad and Tobago safely and enjoy the Carnival season without missing treatments.

Here are 5 tips for travelling in 2023 while on dialysis:
1. Consult your doctor
Your nephrologist knows your renal history and can tell you if it would be a good time to travel. They will also provide you with special dialysis orders to ensure a smooth transition while you are away.

2. Select a destination accessible to friends and family
It is best to travel with a loved one or to stay where one is nearby. Having a loved one close brings a sense of security and allows for easy access in the event of an emergency

3. Prepare travel plans at least 6 weeks in advance
Preparation is key. This time allows you to shop around for a comfortable and convenient center. Use this time to obtain up-to-date documents and testing for the dialysis center.

4. Contact dialysis centres for availability
Every centre may have a different schedule. Contact multiple centres to see if they meet your expectations and fit into your schedule.

5. Pack renal-friendly snack
Flight cancellations and delays are quite common during this time. Be sure to pack snacks that meet your renal diet so that finding food is not stressful.

Persons on dialysis do not have to miss out on the Carnival fun this year. Prepare early for a fun and safe season.
