Protecting Your Heart When It Matters Most:

An Implantable Cardiac Defibrillator (ICD) is a small, life-saving device designed to monitor and protect your heart rhythm. It is recommended for patients who are at risk of dangerous or life-threatening heart rhythm disturbances, such as ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation, conditions that can lead to sudden cardiac arrest if not treated immediately.

An ICD is implanted just under the skin, usually below the collarbone, and continuously watches your heart’s rhythm. If it detects a dangerously fast or irregular heartbeat, the device can deliver a controlled electrical therapy to restore a normal rhythm, often within seconds, even before symptoms occur.

Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy, commonly known as CRT, is an advanced treatment designed to help patients whose hearts are not beating in a coordinated or efficient way. When the heart’s left and right ventricles pump out of sync, it becomes harder for the heart to circulate blood properly, often leading to heart failure symptoms, fatigue, shortness of breath, and reduced quality of life.

CRT works by using a specialised device, similar to a pacemaker, to restore proper timing and coordination of the heart’s contractions. This helps the heart pump stronger, improves circulation, and can significantly relieve symptoms.

For some patients at higher risk of dangerous heart rhythms, CRT may be combined with a defibrillator, called CRT-D. This device not only resynchronizes the heartbeat but also provides life-saving protection by detecting and stopping life-threatening arrhythmias.
