✨ Expanding the ways we serve ✨
Today I’m especially grateful to share this endorsement from the Trinidad and Tobago Blind Welfare Association 💛 a reminder of the continued journey to ensure that every learner, no matter their ability, can access the support they need to thrive.
Over the past 10 years, we’ve been privileged to walk alongside many incredible students with hearing impairments, using educational therapy to build confidence, strengthen skills, and open doors to learning. With this specialized training, we are now better equipped to do the same for students who are blind or vision impaired. 🦯📚
Educational therapy is not one-size-fits-all. It's about meeting each child where they are, respecting their unique journey, and providing tools and strategies that honor their strengths.
Every child deserves a chance to learn in a way that works for them and my heart is full knowing we can continue creating safe, inclusive spaces for ALL our learners. 🌈💛

✍️ is a in which someone has difficulty turning their thoughts into written language for their age and ability to think, despite exposure to adequate instruction and education.
🔅 Many experts view dysgraphia as challenges with a set of skills known as transcription. These skills — handwriting, typing, and spelling — allow us to produce writing.
🔅 For example, people with dysgraphia may write more slowly than others. That can affect how well they express themselves in writing. Plus, they tend to have trouble with spelling because it’s hard for them to form letters when they write.
🔅 Dysgraphia isn’t a matter of intelligence. The challenges are often caused by trouble with motor skills. Those skills can improve with help. People with dysgraphia may also be eligible to use accommodations at work or at school.

⚠️ Before children can learn to read and write, they need to develop the building blocks for literacy – the ability to speak, listen, understand, watch, and draw.
And as children get older, they need to learn about the connection between letters on a page and spoken sounds.
For this to happen, children need plenty of experience with:
🔅 pictures and objects – how you can use words to talk about them
🔅 letters and words – how they look and sound, and what they’re called
🔅 sounds – how words can rhyme, begin and end with the same letters, be broken up into parts like syllables, be formed by blending different sounds, and so on.
You can help with all these areas of your child’s early literacy development by:
🔅 talking and communicating with your child
🔅 reading books together
🔅 playing with rhyme and other sounds with your child.
The great news is that you can do this in ways that are fun for both of you.
✂️➗️⚔️ Phoneme segmentation is the ability to break words down into individual sounds. For example, a child may break the word “sand” into its component sounds – /sss/, /aaa/, /nnn/, and /d/.
🔴🟠🟡 Sound buttons are visual cues to help children break up a word into graphemes. They are circles or spots that can be written underneath a sound to support reading. When you touch the sound button, you then practice saying the sound aloud.
🦇🐀🐈 Rhymes help children with phonemic awareness, which is the knowledge that phonemes are the smallest units of sounds that make up words. This awareness leads to reading and writing success. Rhyme also teaches children who are learning to read about the patterns and structures of both spoken and written language.
💙💜🤍 For a struggling reader, games like Scrabble can seem like a daunting task. So we make up our own rules. It doesn't matter how the game is played. We might have different rules each day! Our focus is on if the literacy skill we're focusing on in our intervention is successfully practiced. It was never that serious. So what if some kids struggle to grasp the traditional rules of a game. Make up your own & make it accessible! Make it logical, make it fun, and make it inclusive.

📚 Reading to children is an important way to help them build language skills. It exposes them to new words and ways of using language. It also helps them learn general information about the world, which makes it easier for them to learn about new subjects once they get to school.
👶 At just a few months of age, an infant can look at pictures, listen to your voice, and point to objects on cardboard pages. Guide your child by pointing to the pictures and say the names of the various objects. By drawing attention to pictures and associating the words with both pictures and real-world objects, your child will learn the importance of language.
💕 Books also help children build empathy and learn how to handle challenging feelings. Parents can use reading time as a chance to talk about emotions and how to cope with them. For example, you might say: “Have you ever felt as angry as the girl in this book? What would you do if you did?” Even a few minutes of reading together gives you and your child a chance to slow down and connect with each other.
🌈 There’s no one right way to read to your child. You can read to them in any language or multiple languages. You can do it at the same time every day or change up the routine. Your child doesn’t even need to be sitting with you — just sitting nearby with a book while they play can be a way to connect.
The important thing is for your child to hear words and language and to have books be part of their daily life. Any steps you’re able to take can make a big difference.

✏️ Students with slow processing speed can struggle in class in lots of ways. They might have trouble keeping up in class, participating in discussions, staying focused, or understanding what is being read quickly.
Simply reading and re-reading the material isn't an effective way to understand and learn. Active reading is a technique we use with most of our kids with special education needs. This means reading something with a determination to understand and evaluate it for its relevance to your needs.
✨️ Try these techniques to make your reading active and improve how you process information while reading:
• Underline or highlight keywords and phrases as you read.
• Make annotations in the margin to summarise points, raise questions, challenge what you've read, jot down examples, and so on.
• Read critically by asking questions of the text.
• Test yourself by reading for half an hour, putting the text away, and jotting down the key points from memory
• Look for 'signposts' that help you understand the text
• Explain what you've read to someone else.

Holistic Learning Center Limited was born out of a simple desire: to reach marginalized students of Trinidad and Tobago. The students who are isolated because of differences in educational needs. Those being left behind because they cannot keep up with standardized testing and rote learning practices. Those who are being forgotten, fading into the background amidst overcrowded classrooms and understaffed schools.
EVERY STUDENT IS DIFFERENT, SO WHY SHOULD BE EXPECT THEM TO LEARN IN THE SAME WAY?
This is a question that we, as educators, ask ourselves time and time again and at HLC our wide range of services allows us to meet this challenge head-on. We partner one-on-one with students, tailoring literacy-based educational plans to fit each student's unique needs. We team up with exam students, teaching them crucial study tips alongside syllabus content, encouraging a genuine love for learning. We nurture adult learners, who so often have faced challenges beyond our wildest imagination; yet who rise again, embracing life-long learning in the truest sense.
MAKING TIME FOR YOU
HLC prides itself on providing not only student support on an individual level, but family and community support. The institution has grown, since its inception in 2015, into a safe harbor, a haven, for students and parents alike. We developed a space which values openness, communication, honesty and mutual respect. We work outside of the system, providing alternative learning and teaching methods. We value collaboration and constantly evolve our methods based on parent feedback. We advocate for student, imploring that they not hesitate and welcoming them, as they are. At Holistic Learning Center, we are here to meet your needs. We make time for you.
